“Dakota?” Jack’s deep voice called before he entered.

So it did happen. And much to my surprise, he was still here.

“Yeah. You can come in,” I said.

The next thing I knew, I was struggling to hold myself back from jumping out of the bed so that I could launch myself into his arms.

God, it had felt so good to be in his arms last night. And it felt just as good when he curled up with me in my bed earlier in the day.

He really was a dream.

As he walked into my bedroom now, carrying a plate and a mug, it was more proof that he was one heck of a guy.

Jack made his way over to the side of the bed. He sat down and said, “I thought I’d bring you some toast, a banana, and some tea. Are you feeling up to it?”

I nodded as I took the plate from him. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. How do you feel this morning?” he asked, placing the mug on the nightstand.

This man wasn’t making it very easy to keep my heart protected behind the fortress I’d built around it.

“Much better,” I replied.

“I’m glad to hear that. You look better.”

I cocked an eyebrow at him. “Are you suggesting that I looked horrible yesterday?”

Jack let out a laugh. “Not at all. But you have some of the color back in your cheeks now,” he noted.

I lifted the toast from the plate and took a bite. “Did you stay here all night?” I asked, too curious not to know.

“Yes,” he confirmed. “I couldn’t leave you here alone knowing how bad you felt. So after you fell asleep on the couch after the movie last night, I carried you into your room and put you in your bed. Then, I crashed on the couch, but I got up a few times to check on you throughout the night.”

I didn’t know how it was possible, but it seemed as though Jack was the perfect man. It was like he seemed to know precisely what I needed in my life.

Comfort.

Reassurance.

Security.

And while I knew those weren’t things that I’d have permanently from him, I had to admit that it felt good knowing that he was living next door and really would look out for me when it came down to it.

I felt lucky.

For the first time in a very long time, I actually felt lucky. He just happened to be here right when I needed him.

It was at that realization that something dawned on me.

“Why were you here?” I asked.

“I just told you. I didn’t want to leave you alone while you were feeling so sick,” he answered.

Shaking my head, I clarified, “No. I mean, why did you come here to begin with? You didn’t know I was sick until you showed up. What was the reason you stopped over?”

“Oh. Well, I kind of got what I wanted. It just didn’t happen the way I thought.”

After swallowing another bite of toast, I picked up my banana and started to open it. “I’m confused.”
