Moltisanti, Amber: Won what? What’s the point of the random number generator?

Cauthon, Jude: Isn’t it obvious?

Jude signed out of the chat, and then appeared in my doorway a minute later with his bag slung over a shoulder. “I’m headinghome,” he said, emphasizing the last word. “See you tomorrow.”

And then he left.

I frowned. What was that all about? I sent a message to Owen telling him that I was confused.

Rather than respond on company chat, he walked down the hall and came into my office. “I thought it was obvious, but we were choosing who gets you tonight.”

I laughed abruptly. “You guys used a random number generator to decide who got to spend time with me tonight? Like Dungeons and Dragons players rolling for initiative?”

“Damn right,” he said, stepping closer with every word. “I have to wait until tomorrow night to see you. But that’s just going to make it SO MUCH HOTTER. The opening band, and then the main event.”

By the end, his lips were only a hair’s length away from mine. My body tingled and I leaned up into him, desperate to feel his kiss, but he pulled away and walked back to the door. He gave me an evil grin before returning to his office.

Okay,I thought with a sexy shiver.Maybe I’m going to like this after all.

I waited ten minutes before leaving the office and heading to Jude’s apartment. The doorman gave me a toothy grin when he saw me.

“Ms. Moltisanti! Been a while since I’ve seen you.”

“I was in Italy,” I replied. “On business, though. Not a vacation.”

He opened the door for me and said, “Glad to hear it. The way Mr. Cauthon’s been this past week, it made me think you two weren’t a thing anymore. He’s a happier person with you around, if you don’t mind me saying so.”

I went upstairs to Jude’s apartment. As soon as he opened the door for me, he wrapped me in a long, tight hug.

“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you,” he whispered. “I wanted to do this yesterday, but… you know.”

“Your doorman said something similar. He thought we had broken up.”

Jude chuckled, but still embraced me. “Can’t break up if we were never officiallytogether, can we?”

I wondered that as he kissed me, and led me into the bedroom, and then I forgot all about it as I turned my attention to the sexy spectacled body on top of mine.

Afterward, as we cuddled on top of the sheets, comfortable in our dual nudity, I sighed happily and said, “Is it just me, or was thatreallygood?”

“It’s always amazing with you,” he replied. “But it did feel extra special. The time apart, probably.”

“Or because I know you want something serious with me,” I suggested. “Knowing that it’s not just physical, that youdohave deeper feelings for me…”

He smiled and brushed away a strand of my hair. “Want to know a secret? I’ve always had those feelings. I was just afraid to express them because of our professional relationship.”

“Or maybe you gave me a little extraoomphbecause now you know you’re competing with Owen.”

I meant it as a joke, but he frowned thoughtfully and said, “Maybe so.”

I turned sideways to face him, cupping his freckled cheek in my hand. “I’ve felt a lot of guilt about this, you know. Being with both of you and not knowing how to discuss it.”

“You don’t need to explain yourself to me, Amber. Not now, not ever.”

“I just want to say I’m sorry,” I went on. There was a hollow sensation in my gut, and it wouldn’t go away unless I got all of this out. “It’s my fault.”

“It’s mine, too,” he said. “If I had been more honest with my feelings, rather than insisting that we weren’t exclusive…” He shook his head and smiled lovingly at me. “Blame is pointless. We both could have done things differently. But we can’t now, so let’s just agree to enjoy each other. Because right now? Being in your arms makes me stop caring about Owen or Furio or anyone else.” He paused and added, “Thereisn’tanyone else, right?”

“No!”
