For a brief moment, hope pushed through the cracks in my walls. I allowed myself to consider it. Walking back in that office. Sitting at a desk. Doing what I loved.

Working for someone amazing like Jude.

“I’d have to work for Owen,” I said.

“Rarely,” Jude replied. “You’ll be working mostly with me. And a whole bunch of other programmers, when we hire them.”

What about the flirting we did at the bar?I wanted to ask, but Michelle and Phil picked that moment to come downstairs.

“You said it was a birthday package!” Michelle said. “I ought to waterboard you with marinara sauce, you big liar.”

Jude blinked. “With marinara sauce?”

“She’s joking. It’s a sister thing. Shelly, this is…”

“Jude Cauthon,” he said, giving an awkward little wave. “I’m Amber’s new boss. She, uh, took my tie. I came here to get it.”

Nice save, I thought. Then I realized that Ididstill have his tie after the night at the bar. I rushed into the kitchen and retrieved it from the drawer where I had shoved it, and handed it to Jude.

Michelle gasped. “I know why you look familiar. You’re cute librarian guy!”

Jude gave a start. “Um, I’m… what?”

“My idiot sister is justmaking a joke,” I said pointedly. “But yes, Jude is the man from the bar the other night. Just a funny coincidence.”

“Cute librarianboss,” my sister whispered to herself. “Nice.”

“I’m going to throw a toaster in your bath tonight,” I threatened.

“Phil Koepka,” Phil said, stepping forward to introduce himself. “I’ve read about the work you did at PayScale, and I’m a fan.” He chuckled to himself. “I’ve never shaken a billionaire’s hand before.”

I almost tripped over my sweatpants.Billionaire?

“Phil and I are getting Thai for dinner,” Michelle said. “Do you want us to pick up anything for you two?”

“I’m fine,” I replied. “And Jude was just leaving. After we finish discussing something from work.”

I glared at my sister and her dumb boyfriend until they exited out the front door. When they were gone, I rounded on Jude.

“You’re a billionaire?”

His cheeks reddened again, and he looked down at his feet for a moment. “Come work for us, Amber. You wanted to in the first place, and you’re a better fit than we expected. Everyone wins. I will beg if I have to, but I’m hoping you won’t make me.”

A list began forming in my head.
