On Monday, we interviewed three more coders. Owen showed up for the interviews, introducing himself and shaking hands. He was polite and respectful to me the whole time. That made me smile inwardly.

He still hasn’t found out.

Jude was stuck in meetings with Owen late into the afternoon, so I left the office by myself around five. A twenty-minute CalTrain ride later and I was walking up to my home in San Mateo.

Michelle was sitting at the kitchen table, surrounded by open textbooks and her laptop. She perked up when I came through the door.

“Where’ve you been?” she asked.

“Work,” I replied. “Where else?”

My sister raised an eyebrow at me. “You haven’t been home in three days.”

“I worked through the weekend,” I said defensively. “Besides, how do you know? You were at Phil’s place all weekend.”

Michelle got up and opened the fridge as if that proved her point. When I gave her a questioning look, she said, “My leftover pasta hasn’t been touched.”

I hesitated, then said, “I made my own food.”

She laughed as if it were a joke. “Have you been crashing at the office every night? Is the job really keeping you that busy?”

I pulled out the glass container of pasta and spooned some out onto a plate. “I’m notrequiredto work that much, but I’m motivated. So far, the work is really fulfilling. I haven’t been this excited about my code since ArgoCoin.”

“That’s awesome!” she said. “You were one of the first people they hired, right? Are you the only one staying that late, or are you getting busy with the other guys?”

Oh, we’re getting busy all right. I briefly wondered how she would react if I broke the news to her with a joke like that. But this was a crossroads where I wasn’t sure what to do. Either I had to tell Michelle about what was going on, or I had to start lying to her.

Reasons to Tell Michelle:

1. We told each other everything.

2. She would probably be excited for me.

3. It would make her stop pestering me to download Tinder.

Reasons not to Tell Michelle:

1. It was immoral to sleep with my boss.

2. I was kind of embarrassed about it.

3. She might think less of me.

“Stop it!” Michelle suddenly snapped at me.

I blinked. “Stop what?”

“Making a list. Don’t deny it. You always stare off like you’re thinking about puppies. Whatever it is, just tell me!”

I sighed and said, “I slept with Jude.”

“The cute guy from the bar?” Then she gasped. “Yourboss? That Jude?”

“Yes?” I said with a wince.

There was a moment where my sister was unreadable. It reminded me of when a computer program lagged for a second.

Then a huge grin broke out on her face and she threw herself into my arms. “YES! It’s about time!”
