Jackpot.

I closed the door and pulled my laptop out. While it booted up, I opened the internet junction box and found the access port. I connected a patch cable from that to my laptop, giving me direct access into the router.

Now I had total access to the restaurant network. I could see every byte of traffic that came and went. I might even have access to the restaurant’s security cameras. There was one in the main room with the bar, so I assumed there were more in the rest of the restaurant and even the rooftop bar.

A tingle of excitement ran through my body. I was used to hacking into systems from a distance. At home, from the safety of my computer screen while wearing sweatpants. The closest I had ever done a hack was Owen’s condo, when I watched it all from a bench across the street. Being inside the restaurant like this made me feel like I was in a Mission Impossible movie.

I still wasn’t sure how to use this new access to get even with Owen. I had been brainstorming ideas for the past two days, and I hadn’t nailed down a firm plan. But that was fine, because tonight I was just establishing my access. Once I created a backdoor account and opened a port in his firewall, I could access the network from the comfort of my home.

I was halfway done opening the firewall port when the door swung open on rusty hinges.

My heart skipped a beat as Owen stepped into the closet and closed the door behind him. The sharp features of his face were unreadable as he stared at me.

“I’m sorry,” he said, pretending to be confused. “Are you lost, ma’am? This isn’t the ladies room.”

I groaned. I was caught. “Goddamnit.”

Owen smiled at me. That charming, victorious smile he had been giving me too often these days. “You couldn’t help yourself, could you?” he said.

“Fuck you.”

“I know that’s what you’ve been thinking about,” he replied smoothly. Thanks to the close quarters, his breath tickled against my cheeks. “You’re really infatuated with me. Can’t get enough of me in the office, so you come here and start messing around, huh?”

I laughed at him. “Infatuated? Get over yourself.” But his body was so close to mine, and I could smell his cologne again, and memories of the gym came flooding back to me…

He laughed as if he was in on the joke. “I knew a girl like you when I was in first grade. Always picked on me during recess. Throwing dirt at me and calling me a butt head. Turns out she had a big old crush on me. I had no idea, until one day she kissed me.”

At the mention of kissing, my eyes cut down to his lips. His full, smiling lips. I wondered what they would feel like against mine.

I pointed at the wall and said, “I would rather lick that circuit breaker than kiss you.”

Kiss you.The words echoed in the small room, and in my mind. Owen bit his lip and chuckled some more, and then ran a hand through his feathery hair.

“I don’t believe you, kid.”

“You can believe whatever you want,” I started to say, “but—”

Owen leaned down and crushed his lips against mine, and I forgot all about what I was going to say. As his hand slid across my cheek, into the hair at the back of my head, tightening into a possessive fist, I forgot all abouteverythingI was doing here. My laptop, and the network access, and my plan for revenge all faded away like spring snowdrifts. All that was left was warmth, and the buzzing excitement while our mouths moved and churned.

I’m kissing Owen, a voice whispered, and the thought thrilled me more than I ever would have expected.

Owen gave one final push with his lips into me, then abruptly pulled back. He grinned and said, “I thought so.”

My chest heaved and I tried to step back, but my ass was already up against a heavy metal equipment box. “You’re just fucking around,” I said, breathless and out of sorts. “Trying to throw me off after you caught me accessing your network.”

“Tell me to leave,” he said, voice low enough to be a whisper. There was a sexy promise in his eyes, and all the confidence in the world. “Tell me to leave, and I’ll go back upstairs to my meeting without another word.”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. My tongue refused to move. I couldn’t tell him to leave, because I didn’twanthim to leave.

I want him to kiss me again, I realized.I want him to paw at my chest, and press his body against mine, and to take me like I’m the prize he’s been waiting for.

As if he could read my thoughts, Owen gave a satisfied nod. “That’s what I thought.”

This kiss was harder, like he was holding himself back the first time. He kissed me with his whole body, broad chest against my shirt and his thigh pushing between my legs, and his hands slid into the hollow of my back. My body opened up to him like a flower craving sunlight, and his tongue pushed into my mouth in response.

All the frustrations and competitiveness we had exchanged suddenly narrowed, focusing into this one physical act as if everything could be settled right here in the cramped utility closet.

I moaned into Owen’s mouth as his thigh ground up between my legs with exhilarating pressure. I reached for his crotch, fingers touching the cold metal of his zipper. Before I could pull it down, he snatched my wrist and pushed my hand up over my head, holding it against the wall while he began kissing my neck. Letting me know he was in control in a way that made my entire bodymelt.
