“You see, son, your pathetic excuse for a father, sold you to me.” A grin lifts the corners of his lips. He trails his hand down the side of my face and over my neck, his fingers momentarily squeezing my neck before they move back to my chin and he grips it tight. “Why?” I question.

His eyes once again meet mine, and I see the insanity in them. A chuckle escapes his lips. The fucker is laughing at me, and I don’t have a clue what he finds so funny. “He gave up his only son to protect himself and the knowledge that he’s been smuggling women for me for years through his import and export business.”

Horror fills my mind. Has my dad been trafficking kidnapped and abused women? Could Vincent be telling the truth? Why would he be lying? My mind is racing with the probability that he’s telling the truth. Of course, it’s the truth, and it was staring me in the face this entire time. My dad has never been innocent. He comes from a cartel family. My mom didn’t want him working in the family business withtioManuel. She didn’t want that kind of life for him, for us. She loved the money he was bringing in, though. Did she know he was doing something worse? Could she have known about the women all this time?

He sold me to Vincent Saint-fucking-Lambert to keep his involvement in the human trafficking of women hidden. Why are you surprised fuckhead? He never had any love for us.My mind blares at me.

“Ah, I see that you’re not doubting my words.” He trails his finger down the side of my face, stopping at my jaw and forcing my eyes back to his. “I had your father against a wall, I’m afraid. See, I had evidence against your father that would see him and your mother locked up for the rest of their lives.”

“My…mother.”

“Your mother never really knew what your father was transporting, but she signed the manifests anyway, incriminating herself as much as him, stupid clueless cunt.” His fingers dig into my jaw painfully, forcing a gasp of pain to leave my lips. “All she ever cared about was continuing to be a beauty queen and that her bank accounts were filled.”

He releases my jaw and grabs my hair tightly, yanking the strands painfully. “I can’t really fault your father; I have a weak, useless son, too.” He releases the painful grip on my hair and steps back away from whatever I’m lying on.

“Why am I here?” I question. A boulder of fear is making its way into my stomach. He wouldn’t have taken me if he didn’t have a plan. Vincent is too calculating to do anything spur of the moment. He planned this attack, designed to take me. It was a setup with my father’s assistance to lure me back home and out of Mia’s protective gates.

“I want my little queen, and I will have her by any means necessary.” He spits out with venom, his eyes dark and heated with rage. “I also want that miscreant son of mine removed from the face of the earth.”

A harsh disbelieving chuckle leaves my lips. He thinks I will be what gets him Mia and Theo’s death. He’s delusional. He picked the wrong king to capture. He might have had some luck getting to Mia if it was Carter or even Finn, but me?Naw, she’s not coming for me.

“What is it that you find so amusing in your current predicament?” Vincent comes closer and presses a hard, heavy palm down on my chest, causing pain to permeate through my body and a gasp to leave my lips.

“You fucked up.” I try to swallow the pain down, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of hearing me scream. Vincent has a hard-on for screams, and I don’t feel like feeding his perversions.

“Whatever do you mean, Mateo.”

“You…took…the wrong king. She will never come for me. She doesn’t have feelings for me like she does the others.” A giant “fuck you” smile crosses my face. If I have to die here, wherever here might be, then I’m going to do it with a smile on my face, knowing Mia is safe back in Casbury and that Vincent is once again going to lose.

“Is that so?” A sinister grin fills Vincent’s face, and I momentarily doubt my words. She won’t come for me, would she?

“You have been out cold for four days, Mateo. In that time, the Stratfords sent numerous search parties to look for you…does that seem like she doesn’t care?” He raises a brow, and I swear he would make the perfect fucking villain in aStar Warsmovie,Darth Vincent, the mother fucker who destroys worlds.

Mia’s looking for me? She’s sending out search parties?I want to doubt the validity of his words.Would she come for me?Maybe it’s the guys; my fellow kings would never allow me just to be taken without searching for me. That has to be it…they must be pushing Mia to search for me.

I honestly hope they never fucking find me. I don’t want Vincent to get his malevolent hands on any of them. Theo and Carter barely escaped with their lives the last time they were in his clutches. “I hope they never find me, you demonic piece of shit. You deserve to rot in hell for all the shit you’ve done to Theo.”

“Tsk, tsk, Mateo. Your words can’t hurt me, but do you know what can hurt you?” He nods his head to someone just outside of my sightline, and a large, rough-looking man comes closer, holding a large blade in his hand. “Let us remind the young Mr. Cabano that he is not on holiday here, shall we?”

The man takes the blade and trails it down my face, the sharp edge nicking me as it moves across my skin. I can feel blood welling in the cuts and trickling down my face. When he reaches the side of my head, his fingers grab onto the bottom of my right ear lobe; then, he uses the knife to slide it through the tissue. The pain is instant; a sharp cry leaves my lips before I can bite down on my tongue and restrain it.

“Tell me how to get to Mia.” Vincent shifts around to the other side of whatever I’m lying on and pokes the wound in my chest again.

I bite down hard on my bottom lip until I taste blood in my mouth to smother the cry that wants desperately to escape. I turn my eyes away from Vincent and stare up at the wooden ceiling above me. I will not help him get to Mia; he should have just let me die from the gunshot wound.

“I think he will need a little more persuading Francis; why don’t you see if you can’t change his mind?” A laugh leaves Vincent’s lips, and he moves away from me until I can no longer see him. I hear his footsteps move out of the room, then a door opening and shutting, and I’m alone with the asshole with the blade.

“You should have just told him what he wanted to hear, boy. I would have ended you a lot quicker. Now you’re going to have to suffer as I cut pieces off you.”

I don’t bother to answer him. I know that no matter what he does to me, I won’t tell Vincent what he wants to know. Him getting his hands on Mia or Theo again would be worse than death for me. I won’t be the worthless piece of shit he and my dad think I am. I will go to my grave to protect Mia and my brothers.

Chapter 24

Finn

“Her hair is full of icy wind and daylight. She is every princess, every queen, in the history book.” Lauren DeStefano

She’slosinghershit, and I’m watching her break apart, and there is nothing I can do or offer her to stop the wreckage. I watch her yet again as she paces back and forth while on the phone with Stella and Clark. She’s a class five hurricane just waiting to touch down, and God help us all when it does.
