I am going to cut his fucking fingers off and feed them to him.

“Breathe,” James says, and I raise my hands to snap at him, but I can see my fingers are trembling.Fuck.

Instead of drawing attention to myself, I make sure I’ve got everything strapped on me tightly, and then I reach for the handle and step out. My door closes, then three echo the sound as we all step out into the sunlight, which has no right to be out right now. Not with Alice where she is.

“James and Phoenix,” Kane says, and everyone snaps to attention. “I want you to stick close to the houses. Try to stay inblind spots so they won’t be able to see you directly out of the front window.”

Phoenix nods sharply. “I’ve disabled everyone’s Wi-Fi for the moment, so any security cameras should be offline.”

Kane takes a beat to swallow, and then he looks at me. “Back walls. Most of the yards here are connected. I want you to breech their back door.”

Finally, something to do. Some real direction. Kane steps into the street and points to the part of the road where it curves. A little two-story house sits on the corner lot with a well-put-together garden lush with trees and perfectly manicured bushes.

“I’ll send a signal over the phone,” Kane says. “Hold until you get it.”

We haven’t done this in, well, never since I’ve been with the misfits. Never with Phoenix, and Kane has always been behind a desk. I’ve seen him in action—dangerous and terrifying and bringing down death sentences upon the heads of people who crossed him. But I’ve never seen him as he is now.

And it’s fucking glorious. I hoard the image of the fire in his eyes because I’m going to use it later when Alice is safe and home.

I lick my lips, then turn and slip around the side of the house, heading for the first wall. I’m limber and fast, so it takes no effort at all to press my hands to the five-foot-nothing brick and leap over. The neighborhood is quiet, so it’s likely I won’t run into any children, and I’m swift enough people might look twice, but they’ll only see a glimpse of me once.

I’ll remain a phantom in their heads. Maybe someday, the pathetic cops in this city will trace those three dead men back to this neighborhood. Maybe then these strangers in suburbia will realize just how close they stood to Hades himself.

But it won’t be today.

The second yard I cross is the same as the first. The third has a dog, but I’m across so quickly it only has a chance to bark twice. The fourth, fifth, and sixth all have evidence of children. There are swing sets and trampolines and thick grass with sprinklers shaped like dragons.

I navigate my way over, and it’s when I slip into the seventh yard I realize I’m here. I’m at the house where Alice is trapped inside. My phone has remained completely silent, so I creep up and see the curtains on the back door are shut. Holding my breath, I tug on the sliding door handle, and I almost laugh because it opens without any resistance.

And immediately, I hear Alice’s voice.

“…liar. He’s going to fucking murder you.”

“He’s not going to find me,” Aldis says quietly.

Alice laughs, and fuck I love her, our princess and her fucking attitude. “You’re a moron if you think he doesn’t know exactly where I am.”

“I’ve made sure he doesn’t. I’ve turned on my own son to prove my loyalty, and Kane’s one weak spot is family. He’s been so desperate since his own died, and I’m all he has.”

“He will track you down and—”

Aldis sighs, and I wonder if he’s got his hands on her. I hope he does. It’ll be all the more reason to cut them off. “I’ve been doing this a long time, my dear. Since Kane’s grandfather was in control. It’s easy to play the dutiful family bitch because they stop believing you’re anything else.”

“So instead, you decide to be a piece of shit who tries to buy a woman to be your breeding mare?”

Oh, my precious fucking darling.

“I decided to take matters into my own hands because my pathetic, useless son has never been anything more than an embarrassment. And you, my sweet little girl, have no judgmentto stand on. Not when you spread your legs like the town slut and take four men—”

There’s a slapping sound, and then Alice’s voice is shaking. “Don’t fucking touch me.”

I fight with everything I have in me not to rush in there right now and take him out. But a quick death is too good for him.

I hear Alice make a choking sound, and it tests my resolve.

“Get all of that spitfire out now, little girl. It’s the last time you’ll ever be able to raise a hand to me.”

That’s it. I can’t do it. I pull my gun from the holster, but just before I reach for the door, a hand grabs my wrist. I suck in a breath and fight the urge to fall into a coughing fit, which will definitely give away my position, but I calm instantly when I turn and see Kane staring at me.
