I press my back to the tile wall behind me, needing the support. Water runs over her face, causing her hair to fall in her eyes. I brush it away and cup her chin. Her porcelain skin looks even more perfect with beads of water running over it. “You stay with me and I’m going to break you. You won’t even know who you are anymore,” I tell her, knowing it’s already too late.

“You broke me a long time ago. Now I need you to fix me, bring me back to life.” She takes the tip of my dick and licks slowly, swirling her tongue. “Fuck my mouth until I forget what happened today.” She looks up at me, almost begging me to save her from her demons. And Satan knows I need her to save me from mine.

I grab up her hair in a ponytail at the back of her head and ease my hardened length into her open, waiting mouth. “I’ll give you everything you need, Shortcake.”

CHAPTER TWENTY

CASSANDRA

Afterwhatfeelslikethe longest day in history, I’m filled with dread this morning, knowing I have to go back home and tell my parents the truth. Brandon rustled up a fresh pair of shorts and T-shirt for me so I didn’t have to put my blood-splattered dress back on. They’re oversized, but right now I don’t care. I just want to understand more about what on earth is going on here with these guys. Their lives are so different from mine.

“Toast? OJ?” Kobe asks us, and I smile politely.

“Thanks, man,” Brandon says to him. “Sorry you have to fuss over us.”

“You were nearly killed yesterday because of me. I think I can fix you and your girl some breakfast.”

“In that case, I’ll have a coffee.”

“Me too, please,” I add with a half-smile. I’m not sure how to act around them. Kobe seems nice enough; he is definitely the most relatable of the three brothers. But there is still something about him that scares me.

“Sure thing.” He fixes us our hot mugs of coffee and places them in front of us.

I pick mine up right away, inhaling the scent, hoping this will give me the little boost of energy I need to face my parents today, because right now I just want to curl right back up in bed with Brandon and hide away from the rest of the world forever if that is how long it takes to feel normal again and for all my problems to disappear.

“How do you know the accident was because of you?” I ask Kobe. I probably shouldn’t be asking questions. Jett made a point of telling me not to, but he and Leo aren’t here, and I feel like out of the brothers, Kobe would be the one to let me in.

He glances at Brandon, a silent message passing between them. “Just a hunch.” He shrugs off my question, disappearing into the butler’s kitchen with a loaf of bread.

Damn, that was pretty much my only hope. Just a hunch, my ass. Does he think I’m stupid? I know what these guys are involved in. They were with Ace, and from what I’ve heard, they were his thugs, doing the dirty work, like collecting unpaid debts and protecting what his club had built up since his father was killed, and I can only assume that means they were murdering people if they didn't comply. That's according to their reputation around town, anyway. I don't know anything for sure. But if it's true, that’s the type of stuff that earns you enemies.

Brandon is quiet this morning, lost in his own thoughts, or maybe he’s just out of it still. I tried to demand he go back to bed after our shower, but he wouldn’t hear of it, insisting there was too much to do today to stay in bed.

While I sip on my coffee, I take the time to look around their crazy-fancy house. In the light of day, I can see this place properly. It’s insane. The kitchen is fully appointed. Dark cupboards with fancy brass fixings. The floor is black marble. I can’t see much of the rest of the house, just long corridors lined with doors that lead off in two different directions. The view outside from the kitchen table, however, is spectacular, with a large pool and an outdoor patio. All built on dirty money, I presume. I wonder which one of them owns the place or if it’s like a share-type thing where they all throw in some of their millions to get a place this crazy fancy. It’s not like I haven’t been in nice places before. My dad was a big movie producer in his day, and he knows people with the kind of money you couldn’t even imagine. But somehow this is different. These guys aren’t famous movie stars, they’re criminals. Well, three of them anyway.

Kobe returns with a stack of toast and places it in the center of the table, grabbing plates and spreads for us to do our own. “Thanks.” I’m only now realizing how starving I really am. Eating wasn’t on my priority list at Andy’s wedding, with all the distractions of the day. I grab a plate and two slices of toast, the butter, and jam and lather it on. Brandon does the same. He is looking so much better than yesterday. I guess a night’s sleep and a BJ in the shower helped with that.

“So, Cassie, what’s it like teaching dance? You’ve only been at the school since the start of the year, is that right?”

I look up at him, a little puzzled. Kobe is trying to make small talk? “Is that what you guys do? Have some early-morning situation, then you go about your day like nothing happened?”

He looks at Brandon, as if getting the okay, then back to me. The silent conversations they have going on are starting to piss me off. “Do you want to talk about what happened this morning?” Kobe asks.

I don’t know if I do or not. But I hate the not knowing, and sitting here pretending it didn’t happen isn’t helping. “What happened to the man I shot? Did he get away?” I don’t know what idea is worse, that he’s still out there and will be back to try again or that their guys got their hands on him.

“We didn’t catch him. But we will,” he assures me.

“Oh.” The thought that he is still out there makes me feel sick, and I put down my toast, my appetite fading. Brandon takes my hand across the table.

“We won’t let anything happen to you. You’re safe here with us,” he tells me.

“But what about this morning? That guy got in here without them knowing. It could have ended up so much worse.” Brandon’s features harden when I mention it, and it’s the first time I notice it. Maybe because he was so unwell yesterday, but he’s different around Kobe. He's one of these guys, they’re not just his friends. He lives in this house with them because he is involved here somehow.

“Security has been changed. Something like that won’t happen again,” says Kobe like it should make me feel more comfortable. But I'm not sure it does.

“Oh.” Every answer they give me explodes ten more questions in my head. I wonder what that means. They fired all the old staff and brought in a new team? And what about my normal life? I have to go back to school tomorrow. Then what? They won’t be with me. Am I safe? “Can I go home today? Or will the big bad wolf stop me?”

“He will stop you,” comes a deep voice from behind me.
