“Do you sleep?”

He smirks at me as if amused by my questions. “Are you trying to figure out the best way to kill me?”

“If I said I was?”

He chuckles. “I don’t sleep and, before you ask, I don’t breathe.”

“The sun?”

“Is not my friend.”

“You can hypnotize humans?”

He nods. “We can hypnotize humans just as vampires of lore.” Then he gives me an odd expression. “Though it seems I wasn’t able to hypnotize you.”

I shrug. “Maybe you were just off your game.”

He smiles at that. “No, I believe there’s more to it than that.”

“Hmm,” I say, not really sure what more to say, because I’m as human as the next guy.

“Any other questions?” he asks, chuckling again.

I squint at him. “Yes,” I say. “One more question.”

“Why am I not surprised?”

I struggle to phrase this most recent one, but land on the most simple set up I can, just plainly asking. “What does the bite of thegargoyle-vampiredo?”

I hope he doesn’t realize the question hits very close to home. The scar on my wrist is covered, but he could read between the lines if he so chose. I just hope he doesn’t.

“Peculiar question,” he says as he eyes me narrowly. “Afraid I’ll start gnawing on you in your sleep?”

“I don’t plan on sleeping.”

He chuckles again, but doesn’t respond.

“Well?” I ask.

“You are an impertinent, little thing, aren’t you?”

“You asked me if I had any more questions,” I answer on a shrug.

He sighs. “My bite can turn a human into a gargoyle-vampire, but that can only be done with intent.”

“What if there’s no intent?” I ask. “Just a bite.”

He gives me another peculiar expression but seems to shrug my concern off within a second or two.

“Well, given how unpredictable the magic of the gargoyle-vampire is, it’s difficult to know,” he starts and begins his pacing again—two steps away from my cell and two steps back. I have a feeling this is his habit when he’s thinking. “I’m no expert,” he continues, turning to face me. “I mean, it’s not as if you’re given a test after you’re turned, but I suppose anything is possible. I’ve personally never found out.”

“Then youkilleveryone you bite,” I spit at him.

“I don’t bite anyone.”

“Then how do you survive?” I demand, frowning at him because one thing I can’t stomach is a liar.

“Those who feed me, do so of their own volition.”
