I was familiar with the spell. It was an impenetrable wall. I was only able to enter and exit with a stone she provided me.

It wasn’t easy, but an hour later I’d lapsed everyone into the throne room. I brought Véa, Lux, and Rafael in last.

And when we landed, the screams began.

“What the fuck is he doing here?!”

“I’m gonna fucking kill him!”

That one hadn’t been an exaggeration; Luna and Larson had to hold Emja back.

Véa silenced the raucous with, “Lux is turning himself in, and they’ve found Venark and Hana.”

No one was suddenly overjoyed, but the violent yells subsided, replaced by gritted teeth.

Lux lifted his arms at his sides. “I’m not here to hurt anyone.”

“You wouldn’t make it far if you were,” Brynn spat.

“Well, Brynn, go on and kill me.” He waved over himself. “Punch me, slap me, kick me. Go on. I don’t mind. Like I said to Véa and Nix this morning, I’m too tired to care. I don’t want to war with you.” He gestured down the long table. “Anyof you. I just want to pay for my sins. Whether that’s killing me, or imprisoning me, or sentencing me to shovel shit for a millennium, I’ll take it.”

Brynn’s brows furrowed, glancing from Lux to me, and then to Véa.

“He’s serious,” Elira murmured.

“He is.” Rafael straightened. “He doesn’t want to rule either. He wants peace. We both do.”

“Youwant to rule?” Rion asked him.

“I don’t want my brothers to,” Rafael said, “and I want my father imprisoned.”

Emja choked on a laugh. “Imprisoned?”

“For killing billions.” Medica snorted. “You think that’s all you deserve, Lux?”

“Like I said.” Lux dropped into his chair and lifted his arms at his sides. “Kill me, esiasch. I couldn’t care less at this point.”

“Must be nice,” Asher snapped. “Just destroy our homes and then croak while we deal with the repercussions.”

“I agree,” Véa said. “I don’t think we should kill him.”

“That’s because you’re spineless,” Emja said.

Véa’s jaw dropped. “I am not.”

Spineless, no, Véa wasn’t. Overly understanding? Too forgiving? Aye. But she had to be. She was the ultimate judge. She was the only person in the universe who could grant or withhold eternal life.

It wasn’t a character flaw. It was one of her finest attributes.

“I agree,” Brynn said. “Not that you’re spineless, but that you’re too forgiving.”

“I haven’t forgiven him for a damned thing.” Véa’s emerald eyes glowed. “I think the prick deserves a punishmentworsethan death.”

“Of course you do,” Lux said under his breath.

“He wants it.” Véa waved a hand over him. “And he doesn’t deserve to get what he wants.”

“Of course I don’t,” he said under his breath.
