A bug flew past my head and slammed into the wall of glass.

Or at least, itlookedlike a wall of glass.

When I lifted my hand to it, it felt like it was. But glass shatters, and no matter how hard I tapped, there was no echo, no tremble. It was like smacking stone.

A cage. No matter how glorious the inside appeared, it was a cage.

It reminded me of my first marriage. No matter how beautiful the gowns Lux gave me were, no matter how lovely the crown was, they were just ornate decorations the birdy got to play with in her cage.

Are you ready? Heylel asked in my mind, bumping his elbow into mine.

Aye. Let’s bring them home.

From his jacket pocket, he retrieved two small glass bottles full of murky liquid. Passing one to me, he whispered in my thoughts,Down it in one gulp. It doesn’t taste so bad that way.

Always do.

I’d yet to find a potion that left a pleasant taste in my mouth.

This one was no different. A bit like dirt, a bit like ass, and just a touch of alcohol that left my throat burning for good measure.

I shuddered as I returned the bottle.

Heylel took my hand and murmured softly, too quiet for even me to hear. Apparently, though, not too quiet for whatever life force in the universe granted the magic of a Witch’s spell its strength.

Limb by limb, I grew weightless. I’d flown thousands of times in my life, so I knew the sensation of soaring through the atmosphere, but this was different. Those times, I was cradled by the wind. Here, now, I was one with it.

I couldn’t tell where I ended, and the rest of the atmosphere began.

Somehow, I could still see, and when the wind blew, I saw myself floating through that force field of glass.

Oddly enough, I saw Heylel as well. He didn’t look like a person, no ghostly transparent form, but like wind that rippled differently than the air around us.

Can you still hear me? he asked.

I can. Can you?

I can. And now that we’re inside, I feel them. Stay close. I’ll lead the way.

Will do.

Like Nix, and Lux, Heylel had power over souls. He was capable of feeling auras in a way that I was not. I could typically feel them, but never with the precision that a necromancer could.

Zooming through the thick greenery, taking in the smells of the flowers we flew past, I stayed close at his tail. We drifted through the wind for several moments.

No alarm bells sounded. No creatures chased us. We blended into the environment effortlessly.

When we finally made it to them, only a few dozen strides ahead, joy crept into me and swelled over every fiber of my being.

Venark lay on the grass, twirling Hana’s hair around his pointer finger. They didn’t look much different than they had when they’d died a year ago. It was wondrous, in a way, to see how rapidly they’d grown up in their new bodies.

They were beautiful. The sweetest, kindest couple I’d ever encountered. Even among the par animarum, they were the gentlest of us all. They had their moments of darkness, but every time I looked at them, this was what I saw.

Two young lovers. Innocent wasn’t an accurate description, not really, but it was the closest I could get to the energy they radiated.

Ready? Heylel said in my mind.

Whenever you are.
