“The things I said. Telling you I wanted you to fuck me. Grabbing you.” Her words were muffled as she pressed her face against my chest.

“If it helps, I loved it. I thought it was really hot.”

Pulling back, she was finally able to look at me. “Really?”

“Christ, yes.”

Her lips curved into a sexy smile. “Okay, yes. That does help.”

“Good. Because it’s true.” I pressed a kiss to her forehead. “After last time, in the guest house, I tried to pretend it was a one-time thing. That there was nothing really happening between us. You said you didn’t want anything long term and you didn’t do casual sex. I said the same.”

“Yeah…” she said uncertainly.

I wasn’t sure exactly how to say the next part, so I thought it was best just to be honest. “I won’t lie to you, Zara. I’m still not looking for long term. I’ve done long term before. It didn’t work out. I can’t do that again.”

“Okay.”

“But we can’t keep pretending there’s nothing between us, can we?”

“No, I don’t think we can.”

“I totally accept how you feel about casual sex. So maybe we could compromise.”

“What do you mean?”

“I get the sense that you’re not planning to stay in town after the house is sold, right?”

She shook her head.

“How about if we agree to see each other while you’re here? No strings. No long-term plans. More than just casual sex, but less than a proper commitment, if that makes sense.”

“Uh, yeah, that makes perfect sense.”

I hoped I wasn’t mistaken about the interest I thought I heard in her voice. “What do you think?”

“I think I like the idea.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. I actually think I like it a lot.”

“That’s great.” I ran the tip of my finger down her cheek before leaning in to press a soft kiss to her lips. “So, it’s settled: no strings attached, regular, not casual but not committed either sex. Got it.” Smiling at her chuckle, I whistled for Bess and said, “I’ll be back the day after tomorrow.”

“Okay. Kiss me one more time before you go?”

I did, kissing her deeply, reveling in the feel of the kiss, gentle, without the driving heat that usually sparked between us. When I raised my head, I watched her eyes drift slowly open and a smile curve her lips. Ignoring the squeeze in my heart at the dreaminess I saw on her face, I stepped back. “Good night.”

“Good night.”

CHAPTER15

Zara

Istood at the sliding door, looking out at the patio, admiring the view of Matt’s butt as he bent down, unfolded a large drop cloth and spread it out, clicking his fingers at Bess to get her to move out of his way. He glanced up and, seeing me watching him, gave me a devilish grin. “Can you lay out a couple of doors here while I get the spray gun ready?”

“Sure.” I moved to the pile of kitchen cupboard doors sitting in a stack, picked up a few and set them on the drop cloth. “Like this?”

“Maybe one less, you want plenty of room on the sheet, so the doors aren’t too close to the edge. We don’t want to accidentally spray the patio tiles.” I took one away and rearranged the rest. “Perfect. You want to go first?” He smiled at my enthusiastic nod. “Okay, put these on.” He handed me a mask and goggles, gave the spray gun a good shake and handed that to me too. “Slow and steady, yeah?” He sat down on the low retaining wall that edged the patio, watching as I did the first door, top to bottom, side to side.
