The woman comes over to the table, carrying a tray containing a full carafe of iced water with lemons and two glasses. As she sits them on the table, she says, “Ε?ναι π?ντα ωρα?ο να ?ρχεται κ?ποιος απ? την Πατρ?δα μας (It’s always nice to have someone come in from our Motherland).” She begins to fill the glasses.

“Π?ς μπορε?ς να καταλ?βεις ?τι ε?μαι απ? την Πατρ?δα; (How can you tell I’m from the Motherland)?” I question. “Ευχαριστ? (Thank you),” I say again once she finishes filling the glasses.

She laughs before saying in English, “Trust me, I’ve been here long enough to know the difference. I’m Cora Diakos and,” she half turns, pointing to the man. “That’s my husband, Jonas. We came here as newlyweds back in nineteen sixty-five. What’s your name, son?”

Doing the calculations in my head, they were in the seventies but looked like they were in their fifties.

“I’m Yiorgos Kourakos,” I inform her.

Cora blankly stares at me. I almost jump when she claps her hands, then calls Jonas over. “Jonas, come here. You won’t believe who we have sitting here.”

Jonas pulls his apron over his head, then places it on the counter before coming from behind it.

“Who is it, Cora? I have orders to complete,” Jonas says with a frown as he approaches the table.

Cora links her arm around his, “This is Yiorgos Kourakos.”

Jonas’ frown drops once he hears my last name. “Kourakos? Are you related to Sebastian?”

“Yes, sir. He’s, my uncle. How do you know him?”

Jonas smirks, replying, “Sebastian is the reason why we are here today. After he moved here and established a life for himself and his family, he brought over several other families who wanted to try a new life and Cora and I were lucky enough to be a part of that. Sebastian gave us the seed money to start our restaurant and when we were able to pay him back, he took what we gave him without any interest. Your uncle is the reason why some of the older Greek’s are here. If it wasn’t for him, we’d still be back in Greece trying to make ends meet. We will always be grateful to him.”

Cora puts on a worried face as she lays her free hand on my shoulder. “If you’re here, then where is Sebastian? Come to think of it, I haven’t seen Yiannis or Althaia in a while. I hope everything is okay.”

Clutching her hand, I tell them, “They are all fine. They moved to Dallas to be closer to their family. In doing so, I’ve taken over along with my brother.”

“Well, as I told your uncle in the past, anything you order is on the house, and we won’t take no for an answer. It’s not about bowing down but showing respect to the family that helped us obtain our dream,” Jonas says with a smile.

I open my mouth to thank him but the chimes at the door have me looking that way. Deanna walks in, looking as lovely as she did the night at Mythos.

Chapter 6

Deanna

Idon’t know how toreact as Cora and Jonas stand at Yiorgos’ table with their eyes locked on me as I enter the restaurant.
