“Hello, Tricia.”

A belt snapped around her neck!

She struggled to breathe. Her attacker leaned close and whispered in her ear, “It’s been a while.”

It was Milo! He had come for her.

She swung the thermos around, but he slapped it from her hand. “Play nice,” he whispered. “I’ve waited a long time for this.”

She tried to speak, but only gagging noises came out.

“You can’t be surprised,” he said. “You practically gave me an engraved invitation. You think I can’t smell a trap?”

He loosened the belt around her neck, and she coughed before speaking. “Not…a trap.”

“Sure it was. The only question was how many of you were out here waiting for me. I’ve been watching you for hours. I had to walk miles so you wouldn’t see me. Imagine my surprise when I realized it was only you out here. Do you have a death wish, Tricia?”

She bared her teeth. “You know…better. I’ve survived both you…and…Barrett…”

“Until now.” He reached down and took the gun from her jacket pocket.

She looked down. Dammit. He’d caught her by surprise. But there had to be some way to salvage her plan. “Wanted…to do…it myself…”

He pulled her away from her car. “You should have known better. I’m disappointed, Tricia. I respected you. You’re a fighter. You alone managed to get away from us. But maybe it was just dumb luck.”

“It…wasn’t.”

He chuckled. “Now you’re talking like the champion I thought you were. But I’m afraid I’m still not going to make this quick or easy for you. I’ve had much too much time to think about what I would do once I caught you.”

She glanced around, still trying to find a Plan B.

He jerked the belt to the left, pulling her away from the cabin. He was leading her toward the water.

“You’ve been living on borrowed time, Tricia. As long as everyone believed Barrett tried to kill you, who was I to rock the boat? But once he was dead, it was open season. Unfortunately for you.”

“Unfortunately foryou.”

He chuckled again. “That’s the spirit. This is going to be fun.” He pushed her down to her knees next to the lake. “You always liked the water, Tricia. Did they tell you how I gave the Spalman boy that statue of a naiad, a water sprite? That was in your honor, because she was able to drown her victims. I thought that would please you. But I’m not sure you’re going to likethis.”

He struck her back with his knee and forced her face-first into the water! He tightened the belt around her neck while digging his knee farther against her back. Her submerged face pressed hard into the algae-covered lake bottom.

Her first instinct was to thrash around, but instead she let her body go limp. Her lungs were already starting to ache, but she had to play it smart and conserve her energy.

Because she had to prepare herself. She flexed her fingers.

Get ready…Get set…

Now!

She swung her arms back and dug her thumb blades deep into his thighs near his penis.

Even underwater, she could hear his screams.

Yes.

She arched her back and lifted her head, just breaking the water with her nose and mouth. She sucked in a lungful of air just before being pushed back under.

She swung her arms back and stabbed his legs again with the thumb blades.
