“I don’t know. You can tell me after your labs take a look. Get them herefast.” She cut the connection.

Now she could only hope Griffin would do as she’d told him, and they’d get here as soon as possible. She took the tissue-wrapped glasses out of her pocket and replaced them in the pillow.Give them a little time. She waited another ten minutes. Then she moved over to the desk and sat down on the steel chair. Lynch gazed at her inquiringly. “Are we finished?”

She shook her head. “Not yet. I had a little trouble and I need a forensics expert to come and examine my findings. It might not be long.”

Kopt was frowning. “You found something? Maybe I should call Mr. Rollins. I don’t think he expected you to—” His phone rang. “Kopt.” Then he quickly said, “I just heard about it, sir. No, I won’t let her take anything.” He hung up and turned to Kendra. “He just got a call from an Agent Griffin, and he bit my head off. What have you got? I may have to search you.”

Lynch stepped forward. “I wouldn’t do that,” he said quietly. “You don’t want that kind of trouble.”

Lord, the last thing she wanted was to have Lynch step in and take down this guard. “No, he doesn’t,” she said quickly. “If he’ll just realize that the FBI will have authority to—”

“What’s happening, Kendra?” Agent Bill Carmack was coming down the corridor from the elevator followed by another agent. “Griffintold me to get here double quick before you caused him a major headache.”

“I’m grateful for the double quick. Did he also tell you to do what I told you?”

He nodded. “He might have mentioned that.”

She nodded at the pillow. “I want FBI forensics to examine the contents of that pillow and take possession of it. I want you to give your colleague authority to do that and then get out of here.”

Kopt took a step forward. “I can’t allow that. I’m sure Mr. Rollins will object to—”

Bill Carmack interrupted harshly, “You’re talking to the U.S. government and we’re investigating a multiple murder case. I’m sure we’d have authority to take any evidence we need. If you want to complain, do it to Agent Griffin.” He nodded to the forensics agent. “Go get it, Sara.”

The woman he’d called Sara was already carefully and methodically handling the pillow. Agent Carmack turned to Kendra. “And the second thing Griffin told me to do was to get you out of here the minute we took over.” He jerked his thumb to the elevator. “Move it, Kendra.”

“I want to stay and watch as she—”

“No, you don’t.” Lynch took her elbow and was gently pushing her toward the elevator. “You wanted them here or you’d never have called Griffin. Let them take care of it now.” He nodded at Carmack. “Thanks, take good care of whatever it is. We’ll contact you later.”

“Whatever it is?” Kendra repeated. “It’s a pair of goggles.”

“Well, you’ll remember you didn’t see fit to tell me.”

“There wasn’t time, and you were keeping Kopt out of my way.”

“Now that’s Carmack’s job, and it isn’t a bad idea to get you out of here.” He shut the elevator door. “You’ll probably be the one Rollins blames if he decides he’s been persecuted.”

“This is an enormous bother.” She made a face. “It would have been much easier if I’d acted on my first idea.”

“And what was that?” When she didn’t answer he studied her face and then chuckled. “You were going to steal the damn thing.”

“Borrow,” she corrected. “I couldn’t trust Rollins. And then I would have known the research was done properly because I would have done it. It’s not as if I wouldn’t have given it back to the Bureau as soon as I got the results.”

He was still laughing. “Then why didn’t you do it?”

“Because if I didn’t involve the Bureau and their forensic expertise, anything I did might not have stood up in court.” She added gloomily, “You have to go through proper channels.”

“I’ve noticed that. How unfortunate.”

“But when have you ever gone through proper channels?”

“When I can’t do anything else.” The elevator door opened, and he said quickly, “You didn’t want to leave until you were sure Carmack and company were safely out of the building. We’ll park down the street and watch to see the FBI van when it leaves. I don’t believe it will be long. Carmack evidently had his orders, and he wouldn’t have wanted to cause any more trouble than you managed to do.”

“I only did what I thought I should do. No trouble whatever.”

“Tell that to Griffin.”
