“Shit,” Tricia whispered. “I had no idea.”

Kendra nodded and handed her a card. “That’s what I thought. But I had to be sure. If you can think of anything else, will you call me?”

“I will.” She closed her eyes for an instant. “I thought I was through with him. But he’s back, like a ghost hovering over me.” She straightened and lifted her chin. “It won’t make a difference. I won’t let him win. I don’t know what’s happening, but we’ll find out.” She looked into Kendra’s eyes. “You’llfind out. I know about you. You’re smart and if anyone can solve this nightmare, you can. Itisa nightmare, isn’t it?”

“Yes. A lot of people died out there.”

“Then don’t let anyone else die.” She got off the desk. “If I can help, notify me right away. You can’t stop fighting, you know.”

“I realize that’s your philosophy. It’s mine, too.” She added, “I’ll try to get the Bureau to reactivate your protection until we’re sure that you’re safe.”

“That would be good. But safe from whom? It’s more difficult this time.” She smiled and lifted her hand. “If worse comes to worst, I’ll just take care of myself. Thank you for coming. Goodbye.” She left the office.

“You promised her protection,” Lynch said. “It might be difficult to persuade Griffin. We don’t have a proven murderer on the loose. Flimsy evidence at best.”

“I’ll call him right away, I’ll persuade him,” Kendra said grimly. “Or I’ll do the job myself. There has to be a reason that she’s still involved in this. I won’t let anything happen to her. Ilikeher.”

“I got that impression. But it might not be an easy job.” His gaze followed Tricia as she shed the robe and dived into the pool. “I was just wondering how good you are at swimming.”

For the first time in a long while, he feltalive.

Milo adjusted his backpack and took cover behind the gum trees near the campus aquatic center. He’d been doing his homework, logging Tricia Walton’s comings and goings and pinning down her daily schedule to the minute. Intelligence wasn’t enough; it took patience and discipline to gather the necessary information to formulate a plan and execute it with grace and precision.

Only the best for you, Tricia.

He’d been given an unexpected bonus with the arrival of Kendra Michaels and her tough-looking friend. They’d spent at least fifteen minutes with Tricia. For what purpose?

Information gathering? A warning? Maybe a bit of both.

Either way, he had a new variable to consider. It couldn’t be more perfect.

The moment he’d been waiting for was finally here.

The game was on once more.

Surveillance?” Griffin repeated. “You can’t say I haven’t been cooperating, Kendra. But now you’re out of bounds. You haven’t given me any proof that Tricia Walton would need it. You haven’t given me any proof, period. Except…”

“Except?”

“You were right. There’s no way Barrett could have planted that bomb.”

“How do you know?”

“The Evidence Response Team found fragments of a blast cap. It was of a type that has been manufactured only in the last five months. There’s no way Barrett could have put that there. Someone else did it. But you still haven’t given me any evidence that Tricia Walton is in danger.”

“We’re working on it. You’ll have proof as soon as we do,” Kendra said. “What if I’m right? And what if some enterprising reporter finds that out, but it’s too late for Tricia Walton? That wouldn’t look good for the Bureau. Why not assign an agent to keep her safe for the next week and give us a chance to get that proof?”

Griffin was silent. “Three days. No more.”

“I’ll take it,” Kendra said. “But I’ll be knocking on your door if that’s not enough time.”

“I won’t be answering,” Griffin said sourly. “You really believe this, don’t you?”
