She gripped the tank’s top nozzle and turned it counterclockwise. The hose shook and shifted on the floor, making more noise than she’d expected.

She’d given away her location. Shit. She’d better make this count…

His voice was sharper now. “What are you doing, Kendra?”

She picked up the heavy device and looked it over. It was a pneumatic nail gun, an industrial-size unit capable of driving small spikes. She had no idea how to check and see how many spikes were in the feeder chamber.

She uncoiled the hose and looked back toward the entrance. The sun had finally set, casting the area in almost complete darkness.

Good.

She walked as quietly as she could, pulling the hose behind her.

The killer wasn’t talking anymore. He was obviously trying to get a bead on her position.

Now if only she could get a bead onhis.

She heard something. Not a footstep, but a rustling of fabric. He was now a few yards to her right.

She felt for the spike gun’s power switch and switched it on. It hummed to life.

She heard those familiar shuffling footsteps.

Heading her way.

Closer.

Still closer…

She raised the gun.

Now!

She fired half a dozen steel spikes into the void, making sure to avoid the area where she knew Lynch was still lying.

The man screamed! At least one of the spikes had made contact. He dove behind another pillar. His breathing was labored; he was clearly in pain.

Perfect.

“Just go,” she said. “Now!”

“Sorry, Kendra. I’m not finished here.”

She fired another spike. “Go!”

He was on the move again. It wasn’t toward her, and it wasn’t toward Lynch. Had she convinced him?

She listened for another moment. He was still nearby, crouched not far from where she’d just been.

She raised the spike gun and zeroed in on the movement. Then, out of nowhere, there was an ear-shattering sound of escaping air.

She took aim and squeezed the trigger.

Nothing.

She tried again.

It still didn’t work.
