“With a couple of Federal agents behind me. Give me a break.”

“Will you let me drive you?”

“Kendra.” Tricia’s lips suddenly curved in that appealing smile as she turned and headed for the street. “You’re a busy woman. Give it up. It’s only two blocks. Let me live my life.”

“This isn’t the end,” Kendra called after Tricia as she started to cross the street. “I’ll keep trying.”

“I realize that,” Tricia said. “I think we might be soul sisters. I don’t give up either, and I—”

A roar of sound.

A black Cadillac Escalade.

Tinted windows.

Going very fast.

Too fast.

And heading straight for Tricia!

“No! Tricia, move!” Kendra leaped forward into the street without thinking. She only caught a lightning glimpse of Tricia’s terrified expression before she launched herself in a tackle to push her out of danger. The fender of the car grazed her and knocked her to the concrete.

Pain.

Blinding headlights.

Hard concrete…

“Are you okay?” Tricia’s voice. “Are you hurt? The car hit you, didn’t it? Dear God, why did you do it? Can you sit up?”

Kendra opened her eyes, but Tricia was just a blur kneeling above her. She had to shake her head to clear it before Tricia’s pale, panicky face sharpened enough for her to be sure who it was. Her gaze flew down the street, but the Cadillac Escalade was no longer in view.

A heartbeat later, a UC campus police car swerved out of an adjacent parking lot. To Kendra’s surprise, Lynch leaned out the driver’s side window. “Get her inside. I’m going after him!”

He spun out as a campus police officer appeared from the lot on foot with his gun drawn. The cop was shouting into his radio.

But Lynch was gone.

Tricia now looked even more disoriented. “Was that—?”

“Yes.” Kendra knew she must have looked even more shocked than Tricia. “I think Lynch just stole a police car.”

***

Lynch gunned the squad car’s engine and roared down the dark campus streets. There were a few students walking to and from the library and residence halls, but otherwise the coast was clear. Up ahead, he saw the distinctive taillights of an Escalade. It was turning left onto a street that would quickly take it toward the I-5 freeway.

Damn. Gotta catch it before it gets there.

Even before Lynch reached the intersection, he heard the squealing of brakes and the gunning of an engine. Seconds later, the Escalade came roaring back in the opposite direction.

What the hell?

Lynch looked left and saw that two police cars had pulled across the roadway, blocking access to the neighboring streets.

Looking for him and the stolen squad car, no doubt. It was totally expected since he’d yanked that poor officer out of his car and taken off with it.

Lynch was impressed at how fast the campus cops had mobilized. He made a mental note to give his compliments to their commander. Later. When the timing was more convenient.
