She nodded. “I think they’re lovers. Naturally I’m in their way.”

“They have a complicated relationship. But they’re both clever. They’d find a way if the time was right.”

“I couldn’t take a chance on cheating them. I’m not good about knowing stuff like that…I’ve never had sex yet.”

“Why not? These days kids seem to start early.” She paused. “That rape attempt when you were fourteen?”

“Maybe. I don’t know. I don’t like to think it would be. That would mean I was afraid. Iwon’tbe afraid. It could be that I’m so busy, I believe it would get in the way.”

“That could be true. And I don’t think you’re afraid. You reach out for everything. That’s a good thing. You don’t want to miss out on that particular experience.”

“Evidentlyyoudidn’t.” She hesitated. “I don’t want to offend you, but I’m…curious. Do you think it’s less…or more since you’re blind?”

“It’s probably a mixed bag. But if I had to choose, I’d go for touch instead of vision on that score. It’s electric and the heat and mystery is so intense that…” Olivia broke off. “However, it’s different every time. You’ll have to tell me yourself if you decide to experiment later. I’ll be interested to hear about it.”

“Hmm. I guess it’s only fair. But I don’t know when that will be, Olivia.”

“When you want it to be. You’re only twenty. You have plenty of time.” She smiled. “But there’s one thing I have to know before I settle down with Harley to listen to my John Williams concert.”

“What’s that?”

“Are you going to need that cup of strong coffee?”

Tricia chuckled. “Yes, please.”

Lynch only stopped in the hall outside Olivia’s condo to talk to Sam Eber, the night guard, for a brief moment before he joined Kendra at the elevator. “I just wanted to make sure that Sam would be on the alert no matter which way Tricia jumped.” He pressed the button. “She seemed to be a bit off kilter back there. How was she when you were walking Harley?”

“Do you mean did I think she was going to thumb her nose at us and run back to her dorm?” Kendra shook her head. “She was a little upset when I asked her to delay going to the dog park until tomorrow, but she bounced back after a few minutes. And who could blame her for being fed up when her life must seem to be one big negative? I believe she’s being very patient considering what she’s been put through.” She stepped on the elevator and pressed the button for her floor. “You must think so, too, or you wouldn’t have been joking with her. We can’t expect her to be full of sunshine and rainbows all the time. That would be ridiculous.”

“And you’re being very defensive,” Lynch said quietly. “I’m not attacking her. I admire her, but I realize that anyone who has gone through what she has might be prone to emotional difficulties that could cause her to consider going to hide in the nearest cave.”

Kendra shook her head. “Not Tricia. She’s stronger than that.”

“You might be right. I just want to be sure we don’t expect too much from her. She’s doing that all on her own. She’s trying to be a combination of Wonder Woman and a female Einstein.” He glanced at her. “And perhaps a little of Kendra Michaels. We don’t want her to get lost along the way. She’s too valuable a human being.”

“My, how you’ve changed, Lynch,” she murmured.

“Not really. I’ve just been watching her try to break her own records at that pool. She has a passion to win. I’m very fond of passion.”

“I’ve noticed. That’s what makes you—” Her phone was ringing, and she glanced at the ID. “Blocked.” She frowned and pressed theSPEAKERbutton. “Can’t be Griffin. What the hell?” She answered, “Kendra Michaels.”

“How delighted I am to talk to you again, Kendra. I decided tonight that just seeing that lovely face wasn’t giving me the satisfaction I needed to feel that rush that was so exciting before. Have you missed me?”

She tensed. She recognized that voice. “How could I? I don’t know who the hell you are.”

“Yes, you do. You’re much too smart to forget me. I’m willing to wager you’ve figured out several interesting things about me just from hearing me speak in that construction site. Isn’t that true?”

“It might be. If I cared to think about you.”

“Oh, you’d care. I don’t believe you can care about much of anything else at the moment. That’s what domination is all about. Didn’t Jackie explain that to you?”

“She didn’t have time to explain anything before you killed her.”

“But I did allow her enough time to see you. I wanted you to know that I was stronger than Jackie even at the end. She was never a worthy Alpha. Pure delusions of grandeur. Did she tell you anything of interest?”

“That your name is Milo. I’m tracking you down now.”
