“Good.” Lynch flashed his movie-star smile, obviously enjoying this. “Keep going.”

She pointed to the bathroom. “There are empty charging docks next to the sink, one for an electric razor and one for a power toothbrush. He took the razor and toothbrush, but not the charging docks. He probably thought he’d be back before the power ran out in each.”

“A valid assumption.”

She glanced around. “But there’s nothing to suggest he actually might have committed murder.”

One of the FBI agents waved his arms around. “Except this whole creepy place.”

“It doesn’t mean he’s guilty,” Kendra said. “The FBI knew who he was when they recruited him. You might even say it waswhythey recruited him.”

The agents gave each other a doubtful look. It was no use talking to them, Kendra realized. They’d already made up their minds about Trey.

As she walked back toward the front door, she paused next to a telescope aimed out a living room window.

“It’s a nice one,” Lynch said. “A Celestron.”

“Yeah, Trey’s something of an amateur astronomer.” Kendra pulled out her phone and snapped a photo of the telescope.

She turned to see Griffin behind her. “Okay,” he said. “You mean you can’t tell us exactly where Trey Suber went?”

“Jeez, Griffin. Give me a little time.”

“It’s okay. We’ll find him.” Griffin’s eyes came to rest on the trading card coffee table. “The guys are right. Creepy. But not as creepy as the auction catalog of serial killer memorabilia in the bookshelf. You had one thing right, though: We knew who he was when we recruited him.”

Griffin moved toward the kitchen.

Kendra and Lynch left the house and walked down the driveway. As they made their way to the street, even more FBI agents arrived.

“Looks like this is turning into a tourist attraction,” Lynch said. “Word must be getting around the office.”

“I’m sure it is,” Kendra said. “I don’t know what to make of this. I talked to Trey the other day, and he was genuinely upset over Cynthia’s death.”

“He could just be a brilliant actor.”

Kendra nodded. “It’s possible. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve all been fooled by a psychopath.” She grimaced. “I admit that I couldn’t keep from shuddering when we were looking at Trey’s decorating choices.”

His gaze shifted to her face. “You hid it well. You always do. Do you want company?”

Her first instinct was to say no. To protect her independence and not let him know how much she needed him. Wasted effort—he already knew that as far as sex was concerned, she thought ruefully. And no one could say that passionate need wasn’t mutual. Why keep pulling away in a half-assed attempt to put some safe distance between them so that she wouldn’t feel too much? Her feelings about Lynch were always complicated, but they didn’t have to be tonight. She could wrestle with it later.

“Sure.” She smiled. “Meet back at my place?”

“Can’t wait. See you there.”

He turned and strolled down the street.

She watched him for a moment, memories searing back to her. She couldn’t wait, either.

Kendra walked around the corner to her car. Maybe she was making a mistake, but what the hell. She needed to drown out the thought of Milo and those hideous photos in Suber’s apartment. She raised her phone and downloaded an app. In less than a minute, she’d installed it and began to use it.

“Hello, Kendra.”

She froze as a figure stepped from the shadows near her car.

It was Trey Suber.

She instinctively straightened into a defensive posture. She slid her fingers over her keys, preparing to jab at the slightest sign of aggression. “Trey…What are you doing?”
