“Yet. But you were just with them all. Tell me, was anyone shocked at the thought I might be involved? Or did my house confirm every dark and twisted thing they ever thought of me?”

“Mmm…Probably the dark and twisted thing.”

“Just what I thought.”

“Trey, you’re just making yourself look more guilty by dropping out of sight.”

“I know. And I promise I’ll go in when I think the time is right. But first I need your help.”

“Why me?”

“Because you’re smart. Brilliant, really.”

“So are your FBI colleagues.”

“I don’t want to ask them to destroy their careers for me. Even when and if I can set things straight, anyone who has helped me will still be fired. They can’t fire you. And if they never ask you to consult on a case again, you’ll probably send me a big box of chocolates.”

She smiled. “I might.”

“So will you help me?”

“I’m not giving you a place to stay.”

“I don’t want that.” He reached into his jacket and slowly pulled out a folded sheet of paper. “This is everywhere I remember going in the days before each murder. Get them to pull camera feeds. They’ll see I was nowhere near those crime scenes, unless I’ve suddenly acquired the ability to be in two places at once.”

“That would be a good trick.”

“Wouldn’t it?” He extended this paper toward her. Seeing her reluctance to move closer, he placed it on the roof of her car.

“How do I get in touch with you?”

“You don’t. This way if it comes out that you’ve been in contact with me, you won’t have to lie if Griffin asks you to help track me down. I’ll call you from a burner phone. Every time I call you, it’ll be from a 678 area code. That’s how you’ll know it’s me.”

“Got it.”

Trey backed away until he was once again lost in the shadows. “Thanks, Kendra. I’ve told you the truth. I’ll be in touch…”

Forty Minutes Later

Kendra’s Condo

“Let me get this straight.” Lynch stretched his legs out before the couch. “It didn’t occur to you to run back to the house where there were zillions of FBI personnel and tell them Suber was wandering around the neighborhood?”

Kendra shook her head. “I figured he’d be gone by the time I could bring anyone back.” She paused. “And he’d given me that list, and I didn’t think it would hurt to check it out. It might save him from being arrested. He does need proof of some kind.”

“Hmm. Those telescope coordinates you noticed go a long way toward giving him a decent alibi.”

“It isn’t enough. You saw how all those agents were leaning toward putting him in a cell and throwing away the key. Hell, I was feeling the same way. Trey is bizarre, and I can’t understand how he could be intrigued by all those sickening serial killers. But I thought we agreed that what he was doing with that interest helped law enforcement to catch the bad guys.”

“We did.” He shook his head. “But you went into the aiding-and-abetting category tonight. Griffin wouldn’t understand.”

“And Trey tried to save me from having anyone think that I was helping him.”

“Which you were doing.” He tilted his head. “And are still doing. Right?”

“Maybe.” She thought about it. “Probably. “But while I was driving home tonight, I was playingWhat If. What if Trey was right about being set up? Who would do it? Why would anyone pick on Trey?”
