“Good.” Griffin paused. “And if you talk to Suber, tell him he’d do himself a big favor by getting his ass into the office.”

“Will do. In the meantime, make sure your team takes a good look at his living room telescope.”

“What?”

She cut the connection.

Lynch chuckled. “I think he knows you’ve spoken with Trey.”

“I didn’t lie. Trey did put this note on my car. I just happened to be there at the time.” She put her phone down on the coffee table and nestled her head back in the exact place on his shoulder. “Now where were we…?”

Next Day

San Diego Embarcadero

Kendra ran along the Embarcadero, taking in the spectacular sight of the Jacobs Park concert shell beside the bay. She’d been neglecting her daily exercise regimen, and it felt good to be doing something normal again. Tricia was training at the aquatic center, and Lynch was tied up in a lengthy conference call with the deputy attorney general.

A perfect time to steal an hour or two for herself. Sheneededthis.

The San Diego Symphony was rehearsing in the concert shell, an event the public was always invited to attend free of charge. She often ate breakfast while watching the orchestra prepare for its evening performances. She enjoyed the rehearsals more than the actual shows; it was fascinating to see the various ways that world-class conductors coaxed such breathtaking performances from their musicians.

Kendra smiled as she ran past. The orchestra was playing Jupiter from Holst’sThe Planets, and she felt her spirit soar with the music. Maybe she’d tack on an extra mile or two to today’s—

Her fitness watch vibrated.

She turned her wrist to see that she was getting a call from Griffin.

Damn. She tapped her Bluetooth headset. “Griffin, this better be good. You’re interrupting anamazingperformance of—”

“Kendra, I need to see you at my office right now.” He had an edge in his voice. More than usual.

She stopped running once she had moved farther from the concert shell. “What’s going on?”

“Can you come to my office immediately?”

“Uh, sure. But can you tell me what—”

“I’ll tell you when you get here. I’ll be waiting.”

Griffin hung up the phone.

It took an hour for Kendra to run back to her condo, shower, and drive to the FBI building. She had barely stepped into the fifth-floor reception area when Griffin appeared and motioned for her to join him in his office.

He closed the door behind them and walked around behind his desk. “Kendra…do I need to place you under twenty-four-hour surveillance?”

“What?”

He sat and motioned for her to take a seat in front of his desk. “Do I need to have you surveilled twenty-four seven, have your house bugged and phones tapped?”

“Why would you do that?”

He stared at her a long moment before replying. “Trey Suber.”
