"Are you serious? He just dropped his kid?" Vince hisses as we head down the hallway to the kitchen.

"Not joking," I say, snorting a laugh. "My mom raised me on her own after he dipped out."

"What a piece of shit." He frowns. "You ever thought about looking him up?"

I bark out a laugh.

"No way," I say, grabbing a beer from the fridge. "Want one?"

"Sure," he says, grabbing the bottle I hold out. "I still can't believe he abandoned his kid."

"Yeah, it isn't exactly a unique story," I say, taking a long swig of my beer. "I never should have told Love, though."

Vince studies my face like he has no clue what I'm getting at.

"It was years ago, when we were talking about family history." I shrug. "I never realized it'd come back to bite me in the ass so hard."

"What do you mean?" he asks, cracking open his beer bottle.

"Love's a beta. I'm an alpha. My father left my mom for an omega." I shake my head. "She doesn't trust that she's enough. She's afraid one day I'll dip out on her for an omega. It fucking kills me."

"Christ," Vince says, rubbing at the back of his neck. "How long have you two been together?"

"Four years," I tell him, blowing out a heavy breath.

"She'll see it," Vince says, pulling a giant jar of honey roasted peanuts out from one of the cabinets we never use.

He sees me watching and shrugs. And Dexter calls me a tubby ass? I've never hid food around the house like a damn pack rat.

I've considered it, because there was a time in my life just like Dexter's when I was real fucking hungry on the regular.

Never done it, though.

"What do you plan to do if Dexter is the kid's dad?" he asks, shoving the peanuts in my direction.

Shaking my head, my head falls back. The ceiling has no answers either.

I blow out a heavy breath, and say, "Be there,no matter what. That's about all I can do. My step-dad, Frank, wasn't around until I was almost twelve. But fuck, it changed everything."

"I'm guessing the baby wasn't planned?" Vince asks.

"Fuck no," I say, shaking my head. "Love had an IUD, but it was dislodged." I shrug. "Shit happens. I can't exactly be pissed about Dexter possibly being the dad whenI'mthe one who brought him in."

"Yeah, I get that, too. What I can't wrap my head around is how it doesn't bother you to watch another guy fuck the woman you love," Vince says, shaking his head. "No judgment. I've got friends in packs. Seeing the kid's pack come together was really eye-opening. But I'm afraid I'd lose my shit."

I watch him carefully. "You'll never know unless you try. Give it a shot sometime. Love isn't like Kitten. She's pretty good about keeping sex free of emotions. She was in love with Dexter long before they ever fucked. So don't be afraid to invite yourself in. She's not going to fall for you because of your cock."

Vince coughs, choking on his nuts. Taking a long swig of his beer, he laughs.

"Fucking rock stars. You do realize how insane it is that you just said that, right?" He scoffs.

I sigh. "Listen, we could dance around this for another couple months, but I don't see the point. You like Love. She likes you. Neither you nor Jude put up any fight when I demanded you get checked out. I'm pretty sure that says it all."

Vince continues to blink at me, like the lights are on but nobody's home.

"Okay, Vince," I say with a sigh. "Continue to play stupid if you have to."

"Fucking Christ," he says, staring at the floor. "I'm not trying to play stupid. I'm trying to tell you that I don't know if I can share. But there's also something about her that makes it impossible to imagine walking away from."
