I can’t deal with this.

It’s all too much.

I need to… I have to… leave Cape Daddy.

In a state of sheer panic, Kane scrawled a handwritten note for Mitch…

I’m leaving Cape Daddy. It’s all gone bad. It’s over between us. Sorry but there’s no other way now. Goodbye Daddy, your boy Kane :(

Kane placed the note next to the vase on the kitchen table and hurriedly packed his candy-striped pink backpack.

As much as it pained Kane, it was time to hop on his bicycle and leave Cape Daddy forever.

Chapter 8

Mitch strode back into the cottage with a big smile on his face. Mitch and his posse of Daddies had completed the hike in a record beating time.

Of course, when the Daddies were together it was rare that they wouldn’t push each other to the limits. They were all very physical men who didn’t know the meaning of giving up or backing down from a challenge. Even so, this was an especially fast hike and a superb time had been had.

‘Damn it feels good to be a Daddy!’ Mitch roared as he undid the laces on his hiking boots and walked into the kitchen. ‘Little Kane? My sweet boy? Where are you hiding?’

Mitch didn’t wait for a response and headed straight toward the refrigerator. After a hard hike in the sun, Mitch needed a big tankard of ice cold water and he needed it ASAP.

The temptation perhaps was to sink a couple of ice cold beers first, but Mitch knew that the best way to cure a thirst was some good, old fashioned H2O. The beers could wait for later.

As Mitch glugged down the water, he suddenly realized that Kane might not in fact be hiding in the house.

Huh. That’s strange.

His laptop’s not on the table.

But what’s that…

Mitch walked over toward the kitchen table and picked up the note. It was from Kane. Instinctively, Mitch knew that something was up. Call it Daddy instinct, but even before reading the note, Mitch had a bad feeling…

‘What the fuck is this?’ Mitch asked, stunned at what he was reading. ‘Leaving?Forever?’

Mitch had absolutely no idea why Kane had abruptly decided everything was over between them. It made no sense. And to leave Cape Daddy too? This was bizarre.

‘What the hell?’ Mitch said, part in a state of shock but also feeling a rising sense of anger too.

This was not good behavior by Kane. Sure, Kane would always have a choice about whether he wanted to stay or go, but this was simply unacceptable. Mitch felt like he was owed a proper explanation at the very least.

It made no sense to Mitch. He had been living under the impression that they were both equally happy with the way things were going. But to read this note, it felt like Mitch had been the happy one whereas Kane was struggling.

But what did I do?

Which signals did I miss?

I just don’t get it.

Suddenly, Mitch’s feelings of shock and upset were fully replaced with anger and frustration. Had the whole thing been a lie? Did Kane even care about him at all?Ever?

All too quickly, the feeling of satisfaction from a power-hike all but disappeared. Mitch felt a ball of angry energy building up inside him. Part of him wanted to lash out and trash the cottage.

But Mitch knew better than that, even in his most angry of states.

No, what Mitch needed to do was reach out to the one Daddy friend who always had the answer when it came to stress-busting activity.
