‘Boy… I think you might just be a genius,’ Taylor said, crouching down next to Bodie and ruffling his hair. ‘And I happen to know that the Laketown Comedy Cavern has got a popular open mic night that runs most evenings. We could check that out. After the day I’ve had, I could do with laughing at some stand-up comedy.’

Bodie squealed with joy.

Clearly, this was a good idea. Without further ado, both Taylor and Bodie went to change into some evening clothes. For Taylor, that meant changing out of his tweed suit and smart shirt and into a far more casual pale blue shirt and snugly fitted blue jeans. Bodie was in a similar outfit, only his shirt was pale pink.

‘Damn, we look good together, boy,’ Taylor said, playfully boasting as the two of them applied some finishing touches to their hair in the hallway mirror.

‘I’m not as handsome as you, Daddy,’ Bodie said, excitedly looking up at Taylor.

‘Boy, you’re the cutest young man in a hundred-mile radius,’ Taylor replied. ‘The Daddies of Laketown won’t know what’s hit them. But don’t forget, you’re all mine.’

Bodie giggled and blushed, and Taylor felt a strong sense of his protective Daddy side come to the fore. Taylor wasn’t a jealous man, but it was true that other Daddies would be eying up Bodie. All this meant was that Taylor was more determined than ever to be a good Daddy and give Taylor no reason to ever look elsewhere.

After all, he wastheTaylor Modene.

But while Taylor may have been the king of Cape Daddy, it was time to show Laketown that he was no slouch either.

The drive to Laketown was quick, the evening traffic not proving any problems. Taylor found a quiet private parking lot and soon enough, the pair of them were merrily walking the streets of Laketown together.

‘Wow, this is so different to Cape Daddy!’ Bodie said, his eyes wide as they walked down a street known locally as Party Avenue. ‘I think I prefer Cape Daddy, but this is super-fun!’

Taylor nodded in approval.

With the loud music and flashing lights everywhere, the energy certainly was different from Cape Daddy, that was for sure. There were plenty of groups of friends and couples walking up and down Party Avenue, and it felt good to be in such a thriving community.

For Taylor, Laketown was giving plenty of food for thought.

This place is alive.

There’s so much going on.

Maybe Cape Daddy could learn a thing or two from Laketown…

As they continued to walk hand in hand, Taylor remembered why they were here. Aside from having fun, Taylor had allowed himself to imagine that he might jump up on the mic at the open mic night and try out some of his own comedy material.

‘Boy, how would you feel if I did some jokes?’ Taylor said, a slight hint of nerves in his voice.

‘I’d love it!’ Taylor replied, a surprised but enthusiastic look on his face. ‘You’ll be brilliant!’

‘Ha, well I don’t know aboutbrilliant,’ Taylor said. ‘But in my spare time I’ve been working on some material. I think I’ll wait and see what the vibe is like in the place first. If the crowd is too rowdy, I’ll give it a pass. But if it seems like a friendly audience, I might just get up there. Hell, I’ve been dreaming about doing it for long enough now.’

Taylor could see how much Bodie was enjoying the thought of him trying out some comedy material and it gave Taylor an extra resolve to power through any uncertainty and get up on the stage.

As the pair of them walked to the comedy club and stepped through the doors, the reality hit Taylor. In Cape Daddy he was a bigshot who commanded respect from everyone. Here, at the comedy club open mic night, he was just another nobody. IfTaylor wanted the audience’s respect, he was going to have to earn it.

With its low ceiling and tightly packed tables and chairs, the club had an intimate feel to it. The neon strip-lights on the walls and long bar area that ran down one wall added to the atmosphere as the expectant audience members and comedians drank and talked loudly before the evening’s comedy entertainment began.

Taylor knew he was in a real comedy club, the kind of place where the audience wouldn’t take any prisoners if they didn’t think the comedian was up to scratch. This was about as real as it got.

Holy hell, have I made a mistake?

Can I go through with this?

But the boy will be devastated if I back out…

Taylor knew that it wouldn’t be long before his moment of truth came. The only question was whether he could go through with it or not…

‘Daddy, you really were great!’ Bodie said, his voice full of enthusiasm as he and Taylor walked back toward the parking lot.
