As the Mages shield themselves, the Dwarves cry out in triumph as they cut down three of the Wraiths.

“Look!” I yell. “The Wraiths are vulnerable when the Mages raise their shields.”

“Concentrate all of your fire on the Mages!” Aurdyn yells to our warriors.

Another volley of arrows sails toward the Dwarves, but I send out another shield of fire, burning them to ash in midair before focusing my shield to protect the Dragons as they fly low over the Mages, releasing a stream of flame and forcing them to repel their attacks.

My pulse pounds in my ears, and my arms shake as I struggle to focus my powers, calling forth all of my reserves to shield our armies from attack.

“Freyja!” Aurdyn’s voice is muffled in my ears as my energy begins to wane.

I’m not sure how much longer I can hold out.

A flash of red catches the corner of my eye, and I turn but too late as a bolt of devastating magic hits Aurdyn’s side. He releases a bellowing roar, and we spiral toward the ground with dizzying speed.

Without warning, he wraps his tails around my waist, ripping me from between his shoulders and cradling me to his chest. He twists at the last second, slamming onto his back on the ice to keep me safe from the fall.

“Aurdyn!” I cry out, but he doesn’t move.

My head is spinning, but I force myself to slide from his now loosened grasp and onto the ice beside him, placing my body between him and the Mages.

“To the King! To the Queen!” one of our warriors cries out, but the Mages send out spiraling bolts of their devastating magic, keeping them at bay.

The line of fire keeping Ruhaen’s soldiers from the clearing begins to fail and they rush through. I raise a shield of fire around myself and Aurdyn, but two of the soldiers are trapped inside as well.

Knowing their swords will be unable to penetrate a Dragon’s scales, they set their sights on me, and rush forward, swords raised to attack.

Fighting on pure instinct, my mind goes blank and all I can see and hear is the battle before me, vaguely aware that my shield is still in place.

I muster the last of my strength, calling forth more of my fire. Flame licks along the blade of my sword as we battle. I swing in a wide arc, slashing the first one across the chest before twisting out of the way of the other knight’s sword.

They have me between them. If they think I will be easy prey, they are sorely mistaken. I feign left, and then twist in the opposite direction, swinging my sword and cutting a gash across the back of my opponent’s leg.

He drops to his knees, and I spin toward the other one, sending flame from one hand as I lunge my sword at him, with the other, dragging my blade across his torso and knocking him to the ground. With a blow from the pommel of my sword, I make sure he stays down.

Everything hurts and I can barely keep my eyes open as I force one foot in front of the other and face off the Mages.

Their concentrated powers begin to break through my weakening shield. A pain filled cry rips from my throat as agony sears through my veins.

“Freyja,” Aurdyn’s voice calls out from behind me, but I cannot turn back. I know what I must do.

The barrier in my mind falls away and everything is laid bare before my Dragon. I need Aurdyn to know the truth.“I love you, Aurdyn,”I whisper through the connection.

His raw fear and panic claw at my mind as he desperately tries to reach me. “Freyja, no!”

Focusing the last of my energy, I level a dark glare at the Mages as I grit through my teeth. “If this is my end, we will all burn together.”

CHAPTER62

AURDYN

Shouts and battle cries echo throughout the clearing as Dwarves and Dragons try to rally to us. “To the King! To the Queen!” Streams of flame scatter across the shields of the Mages, as the Dwarves try to break them with axe and sword, but to no avail.

Freyja’s mind is laid bare before me, revealing the terrible truth. My T’kara will give her life for mine. The heart tree gave her this vision. Agony spears my chest and I scramble to my feet, desperate to reach her. “Freyja, no!”

She raises her arms, creating a shield of flame around her and the Mages.

Terror mars their faces as they realize she is inside their own shields. Like the lighting of a match, a massive orb of fire catches between her palms. In one swift motion, she drops to one knee, slamming the orb to the ground and sending a devastating wave of flame to the Mages.
