Freyja swings her legs over the side of the sofa and then stands. I move close to her side, ready to help her balance if necessary. “Are you all right?”

Instead of answering, she raises her upturned palms out before her and I watch in wonder as twin flames balance on her hands. She turns them toward each other, combining the fire and expanding it into a fiery orb of magic while everyone in the temple stares in awe.

Closing her hands, she snuffs out the flame. I take her arm to guide her back to the castle, and everyone around us bows low as we pass.

An image of our son flashes through my mind again, and I can barely contain my joy. A glorious future awaits us. Freyja will be mine, and I will be hers.

CHAPTER35

FREYJA

Aurdyn leads me through the castle, and I recognize the path back to our rooms. He probably thinks I need rest after what happened earlier, but I do not.

I stop and turn to him. “If you are taking me back to rest, I’m fine, Aurdyn. I’m not tired in the least.”

“It is not that,” he replies. “There is something I wish to show you.”

“What is it?”

“Something important.”

Now my interest is more than piqued. “Can you give me a hint?” I ask, smiling.

“I could.” He arches a brow. “But I’d prefer to surprise you.”

His cryptic answer only makes me even more impatient to find out what it is, as he leads me through the corridors and toward our rooms.

As soon as we reach them, he leads me into the courtyard. We walk along one of the small paths to the wall on the left. He stops directly in front of it and I watch, curiously as he places a hand on the wall, smoothing it over the ivory stone as if searching for something. After a moment, he applies pressure and with a scraping of rock, the stone pushes in, revealing the faint outline of a door where it had appeared as a solid wall before.

He turns back and takes my hand, lifting it to the sunken stone. He places his palm over the back of my hand and the stone glows a faint blue color before fading. “The magic that protects this door is now tied to you as well,” he says.

“Where does it lead?” I ask, peering around him to try to see inside the room.

“To my treasure hoard.”

My jaw drops as I step inside, gaping at the large mound of gold and gemstones piled high in the center of the massive room. L’sair crystals line the walls, their soft light reflecting off the treasure, and scattering beautiful colors from the precious gems onto the ceiling and walls.

He walks around the large pile to a wooden table off to one side. Various weapons: daggers, long and short swords, a bow, an axe, and a shield are neatly laid out on the top.

I run my hand over the sword, tracing the intricately carved symbols that start on the pommel and travel down the length of the steel blade. I lift the sword from the table, getting a feel for its weight and balance before I move through a few of the stances I learned during my training.

“What do you think?” Aurdyn asks.

It’s perfect. “I’ve never seen such a fine weapon,” I admit. “Even the sword that was crafted for me by the royal blacksmith cannot compare.”

“It’s yours,” Aurdyn says.

My eyes snap up to his, and I set the sword back on the table. “I—It’s too much. I cannot possibly accept such a lavish gift.”

“All of this is yours,” he raises his arm in a sweeping gesture toward the pile of treasure. “Everything in here.”

I’m speechless as he takes my hand. “All that I have is yours, Freyja.”

“But it’s your Dragon’s hoard. I’d always heard such things were sacred… precious to your kind.”

“This used to be my most prized possession… before I met you.”

As much as his words touch me, they are also a bit troubling. “I am not a possession and I belong to no one but myself, Aurdyn. I—”
