“I know that humans believe there is strength in numbers, but among my kind it is a sign that one is not strong enough to stand alone.”

Now I understand why he came by himself to meet with my uncle on the day that he saved me. In the back of my mind, I had wondered about this, but now it makes sense. Dragons are overly proud beings, even going as far as placing a show of strength over their own safety.

“I am a Dragon, not some pitiful human male.” He puffs his chest out with pride. “Varys and his people know better than to cross me.”

“Even so, it would be wise to have another person with you,” I press. “Even you can admit to this, can you not?”

He narrows his eyes, his tail flicking agitatedly behind him.

“Take me with you.” His brows shoot up to his forehead. “I shielded you from the Mage’s attack in Arganth. If the Dark Elves try to—”

“No,” he states firmly. “You will remain here, where it is safe.”

“But what about you?”

“Do not worry for me,” he says gruffly. “My kind are not easily killed.”

“Aurdyn, I do not want you to go alone. I—”

“The Mages want you dead, Freyja.” He spins to face me, eyes blazing with frustration. “Do you think they have stopped hunting you?”

“They tried to kill you as well,” I point out. “We defeated them together before, Aurdyn.”

“And you nearly died because you used too much of your power,” he snaps. “I will take no chances with your safety.”

“You willnotleave me here.” I level a determined glare at him. “I demand that you take me with you. I will not stay behind while you are in danger.”

“Why do you care so much about what happens to me?” he challenges. “You do not want me as yours, and yet you present yourself as if you were my mate, ready to protect and defend me. Why?”

My frustration wars with anger and I clench my jaw, biting back the words that I so desperately want to speak. But I know I cannot.

His gaze holds mine; fire burns in his eyes as he stares down at me. “You are holding something back. I know you are. Why will you not yield to me, Freyja? Tell me,” he demands. “Now.”

“I cannot,” I state firmly, hiding my sadness behind a mask of outrage at his demanding tone. “I already told you this.”

Clenching his jaw, he steps back, away from me. In a gust of wind and leaves, he transforms into a massive Dragon. Thick black smoke puffs out from his nostrils as he stares down at me, obviously upset by my answer, before he spreads his wings wide and lifts into the sky.

“Aurdyn, wait!”

He releases a series of thunderous roars as he disappears into the clouds.

I turn to Brovyn. “What did he say?”

The scales on his cheek darken. “You are sure you wish to know?”

I nod.

“He was wondering why he is cursed to love such a stubbornly infuriating female.”

My heart stutters and stops. “Love? He… said that?”

Brovyn nods.

“But I thought Dragons do not love. That you claim and possess.”

“This is true,” Brovyn replies, and a deep ache settles in my chest. “Or so I have been told.”

My brows go up in surprise. “What do you mean?”
