Anger burns deep inside me. “Where exactly are these tunnels?” I grit through my fangs.

I will burn that miserable Dwarf for daring to invade my kingdom. His tunnels could put my T’kara’s safety in jeopardy.

Brovyn opens his mouth to answer, but his nostrils flare and he jerks his head back slightly. “You are mated now?”

I straighten, tipping up my chin. “Freyja has accepted me as hers.”

He claps a hand on my shoulder. “Congratulations. I will arrange for the mating celebration at once.”

“Good.” I crack my knuckles. “We will start by setting fire to the Dwarf.”

CHAPTER50

FREYJA

“Have the King Davin dragged to the throne room,” Aurdyn grinds out. “I will be there shortly.”

He slams the door shut and spins back to me. “Wait here where it is safe while I deal with this Dwarf.” His lips curl up in distaste as he practically spits out the words. He crosses the room in five steps and sits on the edge of the bed. Cupping my chin, he drops his forehead gently to mine. “I will return to you as soon as I have dealt with this.”

“I’m going with you,” I state firmly.

“You heard Brovyn. The Dwarves tunneled here.” A deep growl rumbles in his chest. “And until we seal those tunnels, the safety of our city is compromised. For all we know, he could be working with the Mages to try and—”

“King Davin would no sooner work with the Mages than you or I would.” Of all the ridiculous conclusions he could jump to, this one is beyond belief. “If the Dwarf king came here, there must be another reason.”

Aurdyn narrows his eyes. “He could have sent a raven, or alerted one of our guards at the border that he wished for an audience, but instead he decided to tunnel through our mountain, creating a vulnerability in our defenses.”

I understand why Aurdyn is upset, but at the same time I doubt the Dwarves would have done this without good reason. “Perhaps what he had to say to you, he needed to say direct,” I offer.

“Then he could have asked for a meeting.”

“Has he done that before?”

“Yes, but I… refused,” he reluctantly admits, and I purse my lips.

“Well, now you have your answer. He was desperate to speak with you. Desperate enough that he risked your wrath so he could gain an audience with you.”

“Maybe,” Aurdyn grumbles. “Still… he should have known better. It is no small thing to jeopardize the safety of a Dragon’s mate.”

He tugs me to him and nuzzles my hair as a deep rumbling growl vibrates in his chest.

“Does this mean you will not set him on fire?”

“I make no promises,” he grumbles.

I suppose that’s better than nothing.

When we reachthe throne room, Aurdyn motions for me to sit beside him. When I hesitate, he frowns. “Do you prefer this chair instead?”

A smile quirks my lips. “No, I just… are you sure you wish me to sit beside you?” We may be mated, but it is recent, and I’m not sure what the protocol is for his people concerning the crowning of a new monarch. “I have not been officially crowned.”

“I will always want you by my side, Freyja. You have chosen me as your mate.” Pride shines in his eyes. “And when our people see you on the throne, they will know that you are my queen.”

As I take the seat on the left, his gaze holds mine full of pride and devotion. We sit side by side as the large double doors open. Indignant shouts of profanity laced with venom and ice echo throughout the space as two Dragon guards drag King Davin, kicking and screaming to the throne and dump him unceremoniously at the edge of the raised dais.

Davin springs to his feet, slapping at his clothes to brush them off before pulling at the edge of his tunic to straighten it. His entire face is beet red, from the tips of his pointed ears to his slightly bulbous nose as he levels an angry glare at Aurdyn. Gritting his teeth, he points a stern finger. “Never in all our history together have I been treated like this!” He snarls. “I am King of the Dwarves and I have been insulted and mistreated at the hands of those brutes you call guards!”

He points a stern finger at the two who dragged him in, and they shoot him an irritated look.
