King Davin looks up at Aurdyn, a gleam in his eyes. “What would you say to an alliance, then?” He pauses. “If you do not help us, and my kingdom falls, King Aurdyn, I am certain the Mages will set their eye on you next.”

Aurdyn studies him with a piercing gaze. “I will speak with my Council, and you will have my decision before the end of the day.”

A wide grin splits Davin’s face, but Aurdyn points a stern finger, and his expression falls again. “But you will sing those stones back into place immediately, sealing off the tunnel you carved out to get here.”

Davin dips his chin in a quick nod.

“And the next time you need to speak with me, either send a raven or alert one of my guards at the border,” he growls. “Do you understand?”

“Completely,” Davin responds. “I will get to work on the stones right away.” He pauses. “But I’ll need your guards to release the Dwarves that came with me.”

Aurdyn’s gaze sweeps to one of his own guards. “Release them, but watch them closely.” He narrows his eyes. “See to it that no trace of the tunnel remains when they’re done.”

The guards start to guide King Davin out of the throne room, but stop abruptly when I call out his name. “King Davin?”

He turns back to face me, bowing again. “Yes, Queen Freyja?”

“Have you already evacuated the families from Arganth?”

His expression softens. “I thank you for your concern, my Lady. The children are being evacuated even now.”

As soon as he leaves, Aurdyn turns to Brovyn. “Contact the Council. Get them here immediately.”

CHAPTER51

FREYJA

Isit at the head of the table beside Aurdyn as we await the arrival of his Council. Brovyn is seated on his left. The doors open and High Priest Arkon, along with seven other Dragons walk in.

Arkon bows low before taking the seat closest to mine and the other Dragons do as well.

Their scales range from green, obsidian, silver, gray, and red.

“We congratulate you on your new mating,” the one with green scales and lavender eyes says.

“Thank you, Lord Straikyn,” Aurdyn replies before introducing me to each of them.

I make a note of each name, along with which of the seven other Great Houses they belong to, repeating them in my mind to commit them to memory.

I am surprised to notice no malice or disgust in their eyes despite that I am human. I’d worried they would be resistant to having me as their queen, but it seems I was wrong.

Aurdyn explains the situation as we know it from King Davin, as well as what he witnessed with Prince Aegryn’s army marching toward Florin with Wraiths.

When he proposes that we not only aid the Dwarves, but help my uncle to retake Ruhaen, Straikyn looks to me. “Your uncle tried to burn you at the stake, my Queen. His own flesh and blood.”

I meet his gaze evenly. “I can assure you Lord Straikyn, my uncle would never have done this on his own. The Mages have my uncle under a dark enchantment. He knows not what he does. And if we allow them to keep a foothold in Ruhaen, they will only gather strength there along our shared border.”

“She is right,” Aurdyn adds. “Ruhaen and the Dwarf Kingdom both border ours. If we do not stop them now and expel them from both kingdoms, it is only a matter of time before they launch another attack. The Mages want power. And the way the seek to achieve it is through war.”

One of the other Dragons leans in—Lady Mathryn—her eyes blazing with fire as her gaze sweeps over everyone seated. “And let us not forget that they sent assassins to kill our King and our Queen.” She turns to me and Aurdyn. “Our House stands with yours, King Aurdyn, and Queen Freyja—T’kara of our leader and sanishon of the ancient tomes.”

High Priest Arkon looks to Lord Straikyn and the rest. “If any here doubt that this path is the right course, know that the heart tree confirmed that our Queen is indeed one of the sanishons of the prophecy.”

Brovyn stands and turns his gaze to the Ladies and Lords of the seven other Great Houses. “Is there any House that will not stand with our King and our Queen to take down the Order of Mages?”

Everyone remains silent.

Aurdyn stands beside him. “Gather your warriors. We are going to war.”
