He frowns. “What do you mean?”

She puts the necklace on and her image changes to that of an older human female. Brovyn gasps as do the Dwarves. When she removes it, she hands it to Davin. “Do you think you can make it take on my form, as I am now? So that whoever wears it, will appear like me?”

“I can try.” He holds the stone in his palm, a concentrating look on his face as he begins to sing in the ancient language of his people.

The shade stone glows purple as he weaves his magic through the rock. When he’s finished, he places it around his neck and we watch in triumph as his image shimmers a moment before being replaced by one of Freyja.

He looks down at his hands in wonder. “How did you know that would work?”

“I didn’t,” she replies. “I only hoped.”

My tail snakes around her ankle. My T’kara is as clever as she is beautiful, and I cannot help the swell of pride that fills me as I pull her close and press a tender kiss to her temple. “What next, my clever queen.”

She gives me one of her beaming smiles and then turns her attention to the map.

CHAPTER58

FREYJA

When I’m finished laying out my plan, Aurdyn and I return to the inn. Olmar chases after us, huffing and puffing as he races up the stairs with two steaming hot plates of food. The venison is cooked to perfection and the mead is better than I remember as we sit across from each other by the fire, but I’m having trouble eating it.

Tomorrow weighs heavy on my mind and I cannot stop thinking of my vision. If all goes according to my plan, both of us will survive this battle. But if it does not, there is no question. I will be the one to die, not Aurdyn. I love him and I want him to live.

“Is the food not to your liking?” Aurdyn’s voice snaps me back from my dark thoughts. His brow furrows. “I’ll call Olmar back and have him find you a choicer piece of meat.”

Before I can say anything he’s already bellowing for Olmar.

“Aurdyn, it’s fine,” I tell him, and he stops abruptly.

It’s too late however as Olmar is already knocking at our door. “What seems to be the problem?”

“It’s nothing,” I quickly tell him. I shift my gaze to Aurdyn. “I’m just a bit nervous about tomorrow and it’s affecting my appetite.”

“I could bring you up some tea if you’d like?” Olmar offers.

I give him a warm smile and his cheeks flush dark red. “That would be lovely, Olmar, thank you.”

As soon as he leaves, Aurdyn begins growling, and I already know why. I give him a pointed look. “He’s just nervous too, Aurdyn.”

“He likes you,” Aurdyn grumbles. “More than he should,” he adds darkly. “All the Dwarves do.”

I laugh. “Well, it’s a good thing I have no interest in anyone else but my arrogant Dragon then, isn’t it?”

He curls his tail around my calf as he studies me with a hungry gaze. “Good,” he growls low in arousal. “Because you are my most precious treasure, my beautiful, clever mate. And Dragons do not share.”

I stand and walk over to him, sitting down across his lap. He wraps his arms and wings around me, nuzzling my temple. “Well, this human doesn’t either,” I tease lightly. “I want you all to myself.”

He pulls back, his gaze full of devotion. “I am yours, Freyja. Now, and always. There will never be another for me but you.”

Emotions lodge in my throat, but I somehow manage to speak around them. “If things do not go how we planned tomorrow, I want you to know that I—”

He presses a finger to his lips to silence me, as I’ve done him before. Despite my tears, a smile crests my lips. “Do not speak of death.” His expression is sober. “I will not let it claim you.”

“No one can promise such a thing, Aurdyn.”

“I can,” he states firmly, and he sounds so sure of himself that I almost believe him. “I would fight the gods themselves if they tried to take you from me.”

Instead of answering, I wrap my arms around his neck and he tightens his hold around me. After a moment, he stills.
