“I—” Shock is easily read in his features. As a prince, he is probably unused to anyone speaking to him in such a manner. He narrows his eyes as he walks toward her. “Do you not realize who it is you are speaking to? I am your prince and future husband, and I will not be treated this way.”

All the color drains from Luna’s face, and fear and anger spike through my heart. Without hesitation, I burst out of the wardrobe and pull Luna behind me, placing myself between her and him, baring my fangs.

His jaw drops.

“Get away from her,” I growl. “Now, or I will rip off your head.”

His shock quickly turns to anger. “I wondered who left that mark on her neck.” A sinister grin curls his lips. “Now, I know.”

“Guard!” he calls out and two men and a woman burst through the door.

My eyes widen as a glowing red orb hovers above the woman’s palm. Her human disguise falls away, revealing purple skin, violet hair streaked through with white, amber eyes, and a wicked grin revealing dagger-sharp fangs.

A low growl rips from my throat. This woman is a Blood Witch, and while others would cower, I am not afraid. Avalor employed several of them during the war, and I have dealt with her kind before.

With a flick of her wrist, she sends an arc of magic flying toward me.

“No!” Luna cries out, a moment before it slams against the invisible, protective barrier that surrounds me thanks to the protective rune carved on my back.

His expression falls. “How did you do that?”

I narrow my eyes. “My kind learned quickly how to combat your dark powers.” I growl, and then lunge for her.

She spins away, casting another orb toward Luna. It slams against the invisible barrier around her, exploding in a brilliant burst of light. Her jaw drops.

“She is my mate,” I tell her. “Your powers cannot touch her.”

Her black claws extend into sharpened points. “Perhaps my magic cannot, but I certainly can.”

Lightning fast, I transform into my wolven form. “Touch her and you die,” I snarl. “My vow.”

“Kill the wolf, but do not harm the girl,” the prince commands the witch. “Capture her! Now!”

This Blood Witch is powerful, and while I believe I can beat her, victory is not assured. And I cannot risk Luna being hurt in the process. I must protect my mate.

Shifting back into my two-legged form, I hoist her to my chest and run outside onto the balcony. Without hesitation, I leap from the railing, and Luna cries out in surprise as we fly through the air before landing solidly on the ground below.

Without stopping, I race through the garden toward the forest. If I can reach it before she follows, we have a chance.

“I’m going to shift,” I tell her. “And I need you to ride on my back.”

She nods. As soon as we push through the back gate, I set her down and then take a healthy step back. With a whirl of leaves and wind, I transform back into wolven form. Kneeling down, I urge Luna to climb on.

CHAPTER10

LUNA

I’ve seen Malak shift into his wolven form before, but his sheer size never ceases to amaze me. He is much larger than a regular wolf, and he has thick, black fur, and glowing green eyes. He kneels and I quickly scramble onto his back, settling over his shoulders. I grip tightly to his heavy coat, and he lunges forward, racing through the forest.

The trees and the landscape blur around us and the wind claws at my body as he rushes through the woods at breakneck speed. He is fast in his two-legged form, but even more so in this one.

Panic spikes through me when I catch sight of a ravine up ahead. Instead of slowing like I’d expected, he picks up his speed.“We’re going to jump,”his voice whispers in my mind.“Hold tightly to me.”

Bracing myself, I squeeze my eyes shut and hold firmly to him as he requested. The powerful muscles of his body bunch beneath me a moment before he jumps, sailing through the air.

I nearly lose my grip on his fur when he lands on the other side, but I somehow manage to remain upright.

Only now that we’ve made it across do I realize that he spoke in my mind. “Did you—”
