“Are you meeting with him,or are you letting him hang in the wind?” Kasen asked me as I made my way through the luxury high-rise where Nyx was in the middle of one of her Silent Night events.

“I’m going. Santos thinks I don’t know he’s working with Albert.”

The fucker thought he could play both sides, acting as if he was an ally, all the while poising himself as a second to Albert and Hal.

After the incident with Camilla and Nyx, I’d wanted anything and everything on Camilla and her father. It was interesting how much information one could acquire from those burned by a person claiming to be a friend and turning on them. Apparently, Camilla had left a trail of them over her twenty-seven years.

The investigation also uncovered Kes Santos’s multiple trips out of the country, one of them happening to be Thessaloniki, where I’d spent that fucking month renegotiating contracts with multiple shipping partners.

I had no doubt he’d played the middleman for many of my problems.

“He’s attached himself to your idiot cousin. I’m assuming he’s trying to pawn his daughter onto him.”

I shrugged. “Good luck to him.”

“I take it you’re no longer interested in the debutante.”

“Hal can have her. I have a goddess.”

Kasen pushed the button for the private elevator accessing the penthouse, lifting his gaze to the camera. When the doors opened, we stepped inside.

As the cab started its ascent, Kasen shook his head. “Do you understand the shit you’re about to start if you do what I think you’re going to do?”

“I’m not starting anything. I’m finishing something.”

“They’re going to view it as you stole her and broke a deal.”

“It’s not breaking anything if she picks me.”

“And you’re positive she’ll pick you? Especially after how adamant she was about leaving this life?”

I thought about how things had changed between us since that night on her terrace a month ago. Hell, the change had started in the greenhouse in the Hamptons.

She knew as much about me as I knew about her. It was as if we could let down our guards with each other.

“She’ll pick me.”

I hoped, anyway.

If she hesitated, I’d get her to see there was no escaping the life. She lived an underground existence, even here in Vegas.

A fucking botanist by day and illegal high-stakes poker organizer by night.

Nothing was normal in her world, no matter what she believed. She’d created an illusion of the life she could lead, and she knew it.

If she were my woman, I could protect her. No one would dare touch her.

I’d kill them with my bare hands.

Which put Hal on the top of the list for even threatening anything against her.

“No matter her decision, you’ll need to deal with the men in her life. You have a contract. You’d give up the port for her?”

The elevator stopped, and the doors opened.

“In a heartbeat,” I answered, stepping out into the penthouse.
