I moved in her direction, careful to move slowly, as if she would run at any moment.

When I stood before her, I placed a finger under her chin and brought her face up to meet my eyes. “I’ve acquired a taste for a goddess known for holding blades to throats and calling me an asshole.”

She swallowed as if a lump had formed in her throat.

“Didn’t you say you wanted someone who knew all your secrets? I know everything.”

“I told you I want someone who I can share my secrets with and accepts me.”

“Have I done anything to change you?” I rubbed a thumb over her lower lip. “No matter what you believe, some ordinary chump can’t give you what you want. Besides, they’ll never have the power to protect you.”

“But with you, it means giving up all of this and the life I’ve built. It means going back to the cage.”

“It’s no more a cage than the one you’re in here. There is no escaping the guards or twenty-four-seven eyes. Especially not with this side job of yours. Then there is the fact you’re a Mykos for the rest of your life. That itself has a collar you will never escape. No matter where you go, someone could use you against them.”

“And what about you? I would become a liability that people could use against you.”

“I’m going to make sure no one can get to you, so that is a nonissue.”

“Simon.” Her hand came up to rest on my wrist. “Give me a real reason this is worth it.”

She wanted the words. How the fuck was I going to say something I couldn’t verbalize even if I tried?

Just as I opened my mouth to respond, a knock sounded on the door, leaving the heavy weight of my missing words between us.

I stared down at her, then shifted my attention to the door as another knock came and Stevie called from the other side, “Guys, the next set is about to start. We need Nyx on the floor.”

“We’ll continue this conversation at the end of the night.” I stepped away from her and moved to where I’d thrown my jacket when we’d entered the room.

Reaching into the inside pocket of the suit, I pulled out a black pouch and returned to her. “Here, I have something for you.”

Before she could move, I slipped a platinum necklace with a large teardrop diamond pendant around her neck.

Lifting the necklace, she examined it.

The slight pursing of her lips told me she’d discovered the secret inside the handcrafted pendant hanging from the chain.

“Don’t you like it? Most women like gifts from their fiancé.”

“You’re not as slick as you think you are.” She lifted a brow. “A tracker. Really?”

“Yes.” I held her onyx gaze. “With the shit going on with Albert and Hal, I will do what’s necessary to make sure you’re safe.”

“Meaning, you discovered people you thought were allies are actually not?”

“You seem to know more about my business than you should.”

“I know about a lot of things.”

“Then you understand my concern with your safety.”

“What happened earlier had nothing to do with my safety.”

“No, it revolved around making it clear to you and anyone else who looks in your direction that you belong to me.”

“Possessive men are a turnoff.”

I felt the tension and the emotional weight of our conversation from moments earlier lift. “Says the liar whose pussy is soaked in my cum.”
