It all comes back to me in a shock. The man with his arm around me is my stepfather, which also means that’s his erection digging into my butt.

I jerk away from him as though I’ve been burned. Adrenaline shoots through my system, and it takes my mind away from the fact that I feel like someone has been hitting me with a sledgehammer during the night. I dart a glance back at Reed. He lets out a groan and rolls onto his other side.

I catch my breath. He was still asleep.

I turn back and let the air out of my lungs, only for my eyes to lock with Cade’s on the other side of the room. He’s awake and is staring right at me, an amused glint to his eye.

“Got an early morning wakeup call, did you, little Cuckoo?”

“Stop calling me that,” I hiss.

We both speak in low tones to avoid waking the others.

He smirks. “You look pretty when you blush. Did you know that?”

“Shut up.”

He snorts and gets up from the sagging couch. He stands and stretches, his t-shirt lifting to reveal the ridges of his abs and the dark line of hair that runs downward, beneath the waistband of his pants.

“I’m going outside to take a piss,” he announces.

“We have a toilet, you know. Or is that too civilized for you?”

He shrugs. “I’m marking my territory. Testosterone in men’s urine keeps animals like bears away.”

I have no idea if this is true or if he’s just bullshitting me so he can call me stupid again. I decide I don’t care. I’m just happy he’s leaving the cabin so I don’t have to look at him.

The door swings shut behind him, and I edge my feet off the mattress and plant them on the dusty wooden floorboards. I put my head in my hands and try not to think about how it felt to have Reed pressed against my back when I woke up. It had felt so natural, his knees tucked into the backs of mine, his arm hooked around my waist. He most likely hadn’t even realized how he’d been sleeping.

“You’re awake.”

I jump at the voice and turn to find Darius sitting on the edge of his couch.

“Yeah,” I say. “Sorry. Did we wake you?”

He lowers his head between his knees and then flips his hair up and out of his face. “I’d kill for a coffee right now.”

I sigh. “Same. A tall vanilla latte with an extra espresso shot.” I smile at him. Though he can’t see, I bet he can hear it in my voice. “I bet you drink it black, no sugar.”

He grins. “What are you? Some kind of coffee psychic?”

“Did I get it right?” It’s silly, but I can’t help being pleased.

“Totally right.”

Reed is awake now, too, and he sits up. “Where’s Cade?”

I can’t bring myself to look at him. “He went outside to take a piss.”

I wonder if today will be the day we’re rescued.

“We need to find out where the water supply for this place is,” Reed says. He lifts a bottle of water and gives it a shake. It’s almost empty. “This isn’t going to last.”

Darius agrees. “Let’s make it a priority, then.”

We still haven’t explored the cabin properly either. It was already getting dark when we arrived, so we only did a cursory glance at the rooms or in the cupboards.

Cade reenters the cabin, looking annoyingly fresh, considering what we’ve gone through over the past twenty-four hours. He’s still limping, though.
