His words are ominous.

Up until now, it’s nature that we’ve believed we need to protect ourselves against. What if we have even more to worry about?

The bedroom door opens, and I find myself turning guilty. Darius and Laney stand there, both of them frowning at us.

“What’s going on?” Darius asks.

I exchange a glance with Reed. Are we going to tell them? I guess we don’t have much choice.

Reed holds up the weapon. “Cade found a gun in the roof space.”

Laney widens her blue eyes in alarm. “What was it doing up there?”

I clear my throat. “That’s not the only one. There are boxes of them.”

“Shit,” she curses.

I continue, “And there’s something else. I found a skeleton hidden up there as well.”

Chapter Thirty-Six

Laney

“WE SHOULD LEAVE,” Isay, alarm sirens blaring through me.

This isn’t good. This isn’t good at all. We’d always wondered who the cabin belonged to, but we’d never considered it might be used by a criminal, or maybe a whole gang of criminals.

Cade stares at me. “And go where?”

“I don’t know, but it can’t be safe here. What if someone comes back for the weapons?”

“We don’t know that anyone is going to do that. It’s not like this place was locked up or anything when we arrived. For all we know, the person the skeleton belonged to is the same person who owns the guns. It might be that no one is coming.”

I shudder, hating to think that we’ve been sleeping beneath a man’s final resting place. “And if they do? What then?”

“Then they’ll have some kind of transport and we’ll be on our way out of here.”

I shake my head. “If they don’t kill us first.”

“How will they know we’ve even found the guns or the skeleton?” Cade says. “We put the gun back, close the hatch again, and no one is any the wiser. We just explain we were in a crash, and hopefully the gunrunner will help us out of here.”

I arch an eyebrow. “Hopefully? We’re pinning our lives onhopefully?”

“Given our current situation, even if we take the whole box of guns and dead person out of the equation, I’d say the best we’ve got is hopefully.”

“Or we leave and try to walk out of here,” I suggest.

He gestures around him. “Walk where? We have no idea where we are or how far away we are from any form of civilization.”

Reed steps in. “Well, we’re not going anywhere while this storm is still raging, and we can be pretty confident that whoever owns the guns won’t be back while the weather is this bad either.”

“Do you think theywillcome back?” I ask him.

“I’ve got no way of knowing that, Laney.”

We all fall silent for a moment, considering this turn of events.

“How did they get here?” Darius says suddenly. “If gunrunners have been using this place, they must have been able to access it, but we haven’t seen any roads nearby.”
