In front of Cade, someone steps out from behind a tree, something lifted above their heads.
Before any of us get the chance to react, they bring the thing they’re holding down hard and fast, making contact with the side of Cade’s head. He goes down hard, and I let out a scream.
A second man appears from the woods. He stoops down and grabs the gun from Cade’s belt. They both train the weapons on us. Automatically, I raise both hands in the air, and Reed does the same. Darius can’t possibly know exactly what’s going on, but I get the impression he has a good idea.
For the first time in over a month, we’re no longer alone.
The two men look around.
“Well, well, well,” one of them says. “Who the fuck do we have here, then?”
This clearly isn’t a rescue team.
I believe we’ve just met whoever put the body in the roof space.
