Page 21 of Mine To Take

With some effort, I fill my lungs. Tristan takes my breath away, literally.

“Hey,” I call out with a smile, hoping my voice won’t betray how unreasonably happy I am to see him.

“Hey,” he replies. “You set?”

“Yup. I’ll be right down.”

Lisa comes up beside me and waves. He waves back.

“I’m Lisa. The roommate.”

“Tristan. The date.”

“I know.” She grins. “You two have fun.”

“We will,” Tristan replies, an amused smile playing on his cute lips.

Trying not to roll my eyes, I head downstairs. Outside on the street, Enzo, my eight-year-old self-appointed suitor, is standing by the tiny gate, giving Tristan a challenging glare.

“I’m cuter,” Enzo tells me, indignant. “I’ll be a much better boyfriend.”

“Of course, Enzo.” I ruffle his hair. “But to a girl your own age.”

Enzo crosses his arms and gives Tristan a dark scowl.

Tristan chuckles. “Don’t worry,” he says in Italian. “I’ll bring her back in a few hours.”

With a dramatic pout, Enzo slams back inside the pastry shop, and when the door shuts behind him, I look up at Tristan and find his eyes on me. He’s still smiling, and with his long legs he eats up the distance between us in a few strides, then brings me close in a quick hug.

His body is hard, and strong, with lean muscular definitions that make me itch to explore him with my hands. He smells delicious too, a mixture of spicy cologne and an earthy scent that’s all him.

I want him.

Why am I wasting time?

I should have invited him up last night.

“You look lovely.” His rumbly voice stirs something deep in my belly.

“Thank you,” I murmur, taking a step back and feeling a little weak in the knees.

He leads me to the car and opens the passenger door, shutting it once I’m settled in. Moments later, he slides into the driver’s seat.

He studies me for a long moment, not saying anything. I stare back, hypnotized by the vibrant blue of his eyes, and his lips…God! I want to kiss him.

“Nice car,” I say softly.

“It’s rented.” He grins at me, and I melt. “I planned to explore along the countryside, but I hadn’t gotten around to that till today.”

My eyebrows go up. “Is that what we’re doing?”

He nods. He’s still smiling, and I can barely resist the urge to lick the curve of his lips. I have a feeling he won’t mind. “More or less. Ever been to Sienna?”

“Umm…No.” I drag my thoughts away from his lips and shake my head. “I planned to go with Lisa, but we never got around to it.”

Tristan starts the car. “Sienna then.”

The streets are already awake and vibrant with expressive voices speaking rapid Italian, and the smell of coffee, pastries, and food. It feels very alive.
