I don’t want to say goodbye to Tristan. I want him. Every inch of my body is aching for him, and I spend every minute of the drive thinking of every way he can satisfy that ache.

Less than an hour later, Tristan stops the car in front of the pastry shop.

“Do you want to come up?” I ask. What I’m really saying isplease come up to my room and make love to me all night.

He chuckles. “Very much.”

There’s abutin there. It’s hard to keep the disappointment from my face. “But you’re not going to.”

Tristan shakes his head but doesn’t explain further. “When can I see you again?” he says instead.

I’m trying to control my confusion. I want him. I want him tonight. Right now.

I tear my eyes from his face. “I’m free most days from noon.”

He reaches out to take one of my hands and starts playing with my fingers. The ordinary contact sends sizzling sensations coursing through me. “And would you like to spend that free time with me?” he asks.

“Isn’t it obvious that I would?”

“I didn’t want to be too confident.”

With a face and body like his, I doubt he ever has reason to be less than confident about any girl, no matter how hot she is. “You should be,” I tell him, and then because I need him to know how much I want him, I lean across the seat and cover his lips with mine.

At first, he seems surprised, but then his hand snakes around my neck and he kisses me back until I’m trembling.

“Tomorrow at noon,” he says, when he finally lets me go.

I’m shaking, wanting him so much it almost makes no sense. I’m seconds away from begging him to spend the night with me. Inhaling deeply, I reach for the door handle. “Call me,” I say.

“I will.” He climbs out of the car and walks with me to the small gate. “Goodnight, Cora.”

“Goodnight.”

CHAPTER13

TRISTAN

At the tiny gate beside the pastry shop, she says goodnight. I’m aching to pull her into my arms and inhale her sweet, warm scent, to keep her close and spend all night exploring her secrets. Instead, I watch as she lets herself in through the gate and walks up the stairs. She turns to wave, then disappears into the doorway at the top of the stairs. Moments later, she appears on her balcony and when she sees me still standing on the street, a teasing smile lights up her face.

“You’re not planning to stand there all night, are you?”

Like a modern-day Romeo.I chuckle and shake my head. “I’m leaving now.”

“See you tomorrow, Tristan.”

“See you tomorrow, Cora.” I wave goodbye, then head back to the car, turning one last look at her standing on the balcony before starting the engine and driving down the street.

I should have taken her up on her invitation.

I should have taken her to my place.

Then right now, I’d be kissing her lips, stripping her of her clothes, tasting the exquisite smoothness of her skin…

Just thinking about it is hot, exquisite torture.

Why didn’t I go upstairs with her?

Even with my regret, my reason still seems rational to me.
