Page 31 of Mine To Take

Tristan touches his finger to my chin and lifts my face up so our eyes lock. “You okay?”

“Yeah.” I’m more than okay. My body feels…deliriously perfect. Outside the window, the trees are swaying gently in the breeze. The air smells of flowers and is alive with the sounds of birds and nature. I don’t feel as wild as I did a moment ago, but I don’t regret letting him make me come either.

Tristan places a soft kiss on my chin. His breath fans my neck and I close my eyes. I want him so much. “How did you make me so crazy about you?” he murmurs.

“How did you make me so crazy about you?” I return.

His eyes bore into mine. There’s an openness in their depths, and I feel like I can read the emotions inside. Happiness, satisfaction…as if right now, he’s exactly where he wants to be.

Then, without warning, his eyes seem to shutter. He straightens and takes a few steps back before turning away from me. “Come on. Let’s go get something to eat.”

Confused, I follow him out of the house. In the car, I can’t stop wondering why he suddenly switched off. What happened? I can’t stop painting scenarios in my head that make me feel even worse.

Does he regret what happened?

Doesn’t he want to be with me?

As he drives, I fiddle with the radio until I get a station playing international hits. Tristan taps his fingers on the wheel as music fills the car.

“We should go to your place,” I suggest.

He angles his head toward me. “Thought we were going to get something to eat.”

I shrug. “I’m not that hungry?”

There’s a brief silence.

“Don’t you want me to come to your place?”

He exhales. “I do.” He shoots a quick glance at me, then turns back to the road. “I’m also leaving in four days.”

I’m quiet. I’ve thought about that too. About the fact that we can only have a short hookup and probably never see each other again. I’ve considered that it would be hard to get over him, but it hasn’t even occurred to me to let him leave without exploring our mutual attraction.

That would be a tragedy.

I’m still looking at him, and he turns to give me a quick smile. My stomach flips.

God! He’s beautiful.

And I want him.

So maybe he has a point. Maybe if we go further, it’ll be like touching a forbidden, beautiful thing, and watching helplessly as it explodes into something unmanageable. Maybe we’ll end up wanting more than either of us can give, but I’m willing to take that chance.

I take a breath. “Four days is plenty.”

His lips curve and lift in a small smile. I wish I knew what he was thinking. He remains silent for a few more minutes, focused on the road, then after some time, he veers off the highway and drives through a few tree-lined streets, finally turning into a driveway that leads to a charming cream and terracotta brick house.

He stops the car and turns to face me, and there’s a tenseness deep in his eyes. “We’re here.”

Nodding, I look from the house to the surrounding cypress trees and the bright bursts of flowers in the hedges. “It’s nice.”

“It is nice,” he agrees. His chest rises with a deep breath, then he opens the door and steps out of the car. Silently, I follow him inside where it’s airy and brightly lit, with wide glass doors leading out from the living room to a sun-drenched outdoor patio.

I walk out onto the patio while Tristan remains at the doors, watching me. Either he got the best Airbnb deal on the internet, or he’s a remarkably successful out of work software engineer.

“How did you find this place?” I ask, unable to contain my curiosity.

“It belongs to Nick,” Tristan replies, his eyes fixed on me.
