“Buddy, go on into the bathroom and wash your hands, dinner is almost ready.” Oliver takes off to the bathroom and Carson sets the spoon down, stalking over to me. Before I can say a word, he’s wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me to him. I can immediately feel my nipples harden through my clothes and heat pool between my legs. How can just having him up against me immediately turn me on so much?

“You sure you can’t stay?” His breath is heavy on my neck, and I can feel his tongue trace the shell of my ear, it causes my knees to go weak and I’d probably hit the floor if he wasn’t holding me up.

“Are you saying you’d make it worth my while?” I move my hand down to the front of his jeans and palm his heavy length straining to get out. God, I love how hard he is for me all the time.

His hips give a little involuntary surge forward and I give him a squeeze. He looks down at me and I can see those moss green eyes have turned a deeper emerald. “I think it will absolutely be worth your time.”

I want to stay, I really do, but I’ve made plans and I feel like I’m already losing myself in him. I have to keep something elsein my life that’s not just Carson and Oliver. If I forgo everyone and everything else, what will I have when they’re gone?

“I really can’t.” I reach up with my lips and give him a soft kiss that he immediately deepens. I can feel the need radiating off him and it’s penetrating me. I grab onto the front of his shirt, steadying myself. It’s only when I hear Oliver’s tiny footsteps on the hardwood floor of the hallway that I pull back. His look is smoldering and my lips feel swollen. I know if I don’t get out of there right now we’re going to end up in the bathroom perched on the vanity again while Oliver watches a movie.

“I’ve got to go,” I reiterate.

“Are you coming over later?” I want to, I really do, but maybe it’s best if I put a little space between us. It could do my heart some good.

“Maybe.” Well, that wasn’t exactly a no, but at least I’m trying.

Hours later I’m sitting in my car, engine off, hands slightly shaking. I glance back towards my house and see that Violet’s made it home safely. Good. I’m not so petty that I want something bad to happen to her but I’m also not ready to go in there and speak to her yet. I need to sort out a few of my emotions first. I pull my phone out of my bag with unsteady hands and quickly type a message.

Me:Are you awake?

It only takes a few seconds to get a response.

Carson:Yeah, I’ll leave the door unlocked for you.

I take a deep breath and exit my car, navigating the walkway up to Carson’s door. Just when I’m about to reach for the doorknob he opens it.

“Hey, babe.” He’s smiling until he sees my face. Then he moves forward at lightning speed and wraps me in a tight hug. “Bianca, what’s wrong? Tell me.”

“I’m fine really. I’m fine.” And I really am, I think I’m more shocked than anything. Though there’s a little hurt mixed in there too.

Carson takes my hand and leads me to the couch, sitting down himself before settling me in his lap. I’ve never been quite comfortable with this position. I always feel like I’m too big for it and it makes me feel exposed, but not tonight. Tonight, I relish the feeling of his arms around me holding me tight. I lay my head down against his shoulder and take a moment to feel his hard solid body holding me.

“Tell me what’s wrong, baby.” He brushes the hair out of my face and rubs small circles on my back. I slowly start to calm down, my hands becoming steadier. Carson’s patiently waiting for me to tell him why I’m upset, and it warms my heart that he isn’t pushing me for answers before I’m ready.

When I finally get my thoughts in order I start to speak. “You know how I was picking up my mom for dinner and we were going to stop by my dad’s to see if he wanted to go with us?” I can feel his silent nod against the top of my head so I continue. “Yeah, well, his place has never really been one of those knock before you enter places. I mean, I have a key. I just wasn’t expecting…” My voice drifts off thinking about what happened again.

“You weren’t expecting what?” he prods gently.

“When Mom and I walked in, Dad and Violet were both half naked, going at it in the kitchen.”

There are a few beats of silence before he says. “Oh. So, you’ve finally figured it out, huh?”

I pull away from him quickly and lean back so I can look into his eyes. I don’t see any surprise there and I’m confused.

“Youknew?” I practically shout and whack him on the chest.

“Well, I didn’t have any tangible proof, but I was pretty sure.”

“What are you talking about?” I demand.

He lets out a sigh and pulls me back against his chest. “I’m a detective, remember? It’s my job to piece things together and see things other people miss.

“A few days after I moved in your dad was sitting outside in his truck well after midnight and watching your house. I didn’t know who he was, so I approached him to find out what was going on. I didn’t want some man spying on you three. I found out he was your dad and he made up some lame excuse that he was just checking on you to make sure you made it home alright and couldn’t reach you on the phone, except he accidentally said he was waiting for Violet before correcting himself. In my experience, a man only drags himself out of bed to lurk in the shadows and make sure a woman gets home alright if he’s interested in her. I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on but I figured it had very little to do with you. He seemed harmless enough, so I just sent him on his way.”

“You never told me that.”
