“It sounds like she convinced the guy she would go quietly with him if he left Oliver.”

“Smart girl,” Rage says while nodding. While I’d love to agree with that sentiment, I can’t think of anything other than getting her back right this moment.

“We need to put a trace on her cell ASAP.”

Out of the corner of my eye I see Oliver pull away from the officer I’ve handed him off to and he comes running towards me. “I have her phone, Dad.” He lifts it up to me and I can’t help but swear when I see its crushed state. While this guy certainly isn’t a professional—or else he wouldn’t have been talked into giving up one of his hostages—he does have some idea what he’s doing.

“Did she leave anything else?” I ask. He runs to the table and comes back with Bianca’s purse. He must have made her ditch the entire thing just in case, even after obliterating her phone.

“God-fucking-damnit,” I roar. I know how upset Oliver is when he doesn’t even bother calling me out on my cursing. I drop to a knee in front of him and take him by the shoulders. “I need you to think really hard for me, Oliver. Did the man or Bianca say anything about where they might be going? Anything at all that can help us find her?”

He scrunches his face up like he’s concentrating hard then suddenly his features light up. “My watch!”

“What are you talking about?” I ask.

“She gave me a big hug before she left and she pulled the watch off my arm. I almost cried because she didn’t loosen it when she pulled it off my hand, but she told me toshhhh. I don’t think the man saw it, he was looking behind us and didn’t say anything when she put it into her jacket pocket.”

I want to let out a whoop of joy knowing that Bianca had the wherewithal to grab the tracker, but of course, that doesn’t mean that he didn’t find it later or that he hasn’t done something to her already. “You did a great job, buddy.” I try to reassure him.

“Is Bianca going to come back?” He asks, his eyes once again welling with tears. The truth is that I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know where exactly Bianca is, what’s happening to her, or even what this guy’s plans are for her. But I can’t tell Oliver that. Instead I give him the best smile I can muster and squeeze his shoulder.

“Rafe and I are going to go get her right now. I promise.”

He nods his head solemnly at me like he believes every damn word that’s coming out of my mouth and I only hope I can live up to the trust he has in me.

I quickly jog with Oliver back to the officer he was with and am informed that Gloria is on her way to come get him from the park. With a sigh of relief I thank the officer and quickly dig my phone out of my pocket, pulling up the tracking app for Oliver’s watch.

“What have you got there?” Rafe asks, peering over my shoulder.

“It sounds like after he ditched her phone Bianca grabbed Oliver’s tracker so with any luck I should be able to pull it up on here and find out where she is.”

“So what you’re saying is, not only does your girl have balls of steel, she risked herself to save your kid, and then was smart enough to give us a way to track her down?”

I try to tamp down the pride I feel at his words because now is not the time to think about what an amazing woman Bianca is, but I can’t help letting a, “You’re damn right she is,” slip out.

“Fuck, when this is all over you’re going to have to help me find myself one of those.” I barely hear his words because I’m staring so intently at the screen on my phone. How long is it going to take this damn thing to load? All it does is flashConnectingover and over again.

“Goddamn it!” It’s all I can do to not fling the thing across the park.

“Calm down for a second, Turner. Just give it a minute. She could be in a place with crappy reception.” I grumble under my breath but still don’t pull my eyes away from the screen.

Connecting… Connecting… Connected.

I nearly let out a whoop but tamper down my excitement. The dot is still and not moving which means that it was either ditched somewhere or they’re now in one place. I see that it’s about five miles away from our location but I don’t know very much about the area so I shove the phone towards Rafe so he can have a look at it.

“Okay, this is down by one of the old waterfronts. Lots of abandoned houses and warehouses there. It would make sense that he would be holed up in one of these.”

“C’mon, let’s go.” I grab my phone back from him and start jogging back towards my unmarked cruiser, Rafe close on my heels.

“Don’t you think we should call in for some backup?” He asks.

“You can call them on the way. I’m not going to let something happen to her while I’m sitting here on my ass. Hell, something could have happened to her already.”

“You can’t think like that,” Rafe chides as we both slide into the car. I don’t even bother saying anything back to him. We’ve both been cops long enough to know she could very well be dead already, he’s just trying to keep my hopes up. The only thing that’s really keeping me going is the thought that this guy is obviously obsessed with not only me, but with making me pay for whatever it is he thinks I’ve done to him. I don’t think he’d just kill Bianca and leave her in some abandoned building for me to find. No, he wants me to see what he’s going to do to her.

It’s that thought that has my foot solidly on the floor of the car as we speed out of the parking lot, tires squealing as Rafe gets on the phone to call in our destination.
