“Of course. We were in the same grade in school.”

Beckett narrows his eyes on Cedar. “You didn’t date her, did you?”

Cedar snorts. “Of course not.”

“Why not? She’s gorgeous and smart.”

“I agree she’s gorgeous. She’s also too smart for me.”

“Bullshit,” I mutter. “Everyone is equal. No one’s too smart for another person. Or too pretty. Or too rich. You should date whoever you want.”

“Except Lilac. He shouldn’t date my fiancée.”

I roll my eyes at Beckett. “I guess you can be a dork after all.”

“Drawing boundaries does not make me a dork.”

“If Cedar had wanted Lilac, he could have dated her in high school.”

“Let me make it clear,” Cedar interrupts. “I never dated Lilac or any of the other West sisters.”

“Really?” My nose wrinkles. “All of the West daughters are gorgeous. And funny and smart.”

“Have you not met their mom?”

“Yeah. Ruby’s cool.”

“She also handed out condoms to any boys who dated her daughters.”

I giggle. “She gave my sister a box at Patience’s Sip N See Party. My sister’s face turned the color of an overripe tomato. It was hilarious.”

“It’s not as hilarious when you’re a pimple-faced fifteen-year-old who has Mrs. West for English class the next day.”

“Isn’t Ruby the principal?”

“She is now. When I was in school, she was the English teacher. An English teacher who didn’t shy away from literature with explicit sex scenes.” He shivers.

“I’ll get a list from you later,” I tell him before focusing on Beckett. “Are we good?”

He ruffles my hair. “Always.” He leans down to kiss my cheek. “Be good.”

I smirk. “But being good is boring.”

“You’re going to be the death of me,” he mutters before pointing a finger at Cedar. “I’ve got my eye on you.” Cedar salutes in response.

Beckett marches toward the car park and I start to follow him, but Cedar grasps my elbow to stop me.

“Can we talk?”

“Can we? Yes. Will we? No.”

“We need to talk.”

“I thought my not answering your texts or picking up your calls would clue you in. I don’t want to talk.”

The man is a filthy liar.

“I miss my friend.”
