“Did Beckett cut you off from your trust fund?”

The tips of her ears darken. “Maybe.”

“And you thought you could show up here and Beckett would give you more money?”

While I’ve been working my ass off to not need my trust fund, she’s been blowing through hers. Why did I ever think we were similar? She’s a user. Plain and simple.

“Can we table this discussion for the moment?” Lilac asks, and I snarl at her. She holds her hands up in surrender. “I understand you’re upset. I’m not trying to overlook it. But I do have a limited amount of time today to select my wedding gown.” She pulls out her phone. “The dress should be selected this week. Next week—”

I cut her off before she can list her entire wedding planning schedule. “Of course, Lilac. We’ll pick out your dress today.”

“The bridesmaids’ dresses need to be selected today, too.”

“Naturally.”

I whirl around to give Olivia my back. She turned her back on me and this family. She can experience how it feels for a change.

“Freaking Olivia! Who does she think she is? Waltzing back into our lives without so much as an apology?”

Cassie stomps back and forth in front of the sofa as she rants. Diva chases after her but when her mommy doesn’t notice her, she starts running in circles around Cassie’s legs until Cassie’s forced to stop or risk breaking her neck.

“Not now, Diva.”

Diva yips at her.

“Just because your name is Diva doesn’t mean you can be a diva all the time.”

Another yip.

Cassie throws her arms in the air. “Who are you to say I’m self-centered? Have you met my sister? She’s the definition of self-centered. She’s arrogant, doesn’t care for anyone besides herself, and doesn’t think of anyone besides herself. Egocentric. Conceited. She’s… she’s…she’s…UGH!” she screams. “Give me a dictionary. I need more synonyms for my self-centered sister.”

A vein pulses on her forehead and her nostrils flare. Time to stop this before she gives herself a heart attack.

I grasp her shoulders and say the one thing guaranteed to push her off kilter. “She’s me.”

She rears back. “You are nothing like Olivia. Nothing!”

I cock my brow. “I’m not? I abandoned my family. I’m hiding out on this land and avoiding my hometown. I’m exactly like her.”

“Really? Did you blow through your trust fund using all the money on alcohol and good times?”

She’s got me there. “I didn’t have a trust fund, but I’ve done some drinking in my day.”

Her nose wrinkles. She’s adorable and I can’t resist leaning down to kiss the tip of her nose.

“You need to forgive her. If not for her, for yourself. This,” I motion toward the living area she’s been pacing up and down for the past hour, “is not healthy.”

Her shoulders slump. “I need time. I’m not ready.”

“Take all the time you need. There’s no deadline here, princess.”

“Okay,” she gives in, but I know the battle isn’t over.
