As one who had stubbornly dismissed the idea of fate, destiny, kismet—too many factors complicated that simplistic approach to life—meeting JJ had him rethinking the concept.

As he dressed, he smiled at the thought of his day. JJ in the morning, in the afternoon, and most wonderfully, in the evening. He had come to love his weekends.

He entered the kitchen, picked up his laptop case, and headed out the door.

Chapter 43

“Do you know what day it is?” Alex asked JJ as the three of them went through their ritual scrambling around the house getting ready to leave for campus one morning.

“Nope,” JJ replied not missing a beat in her routine. “But I’ll take a guess. Is it National-Take-Your-Portuguese-Water-Dog-To-Lunch Day?”

“No, it’s your anniversary.”

JJ abruptly stopped pouring her coffee and stared at Alex, who was checking the contents of her backpack.

“My anniversary?”

“Yup.”

“And I was supposed to remember this anniversary commemorating I don’t know what?”

“Yup. I thought you would, at least. After all, you’re the romance author, not me.”

“That’s true,” she said slowly, thinking carefully before forming her words. “But you are my romantic creation. Sometimes you view life a little differently than I do.”

That seemed a much nicer way of saying she was a total romantic lunatic. But, heck, what can you expect? She normally lived inside the pages of romance novel.

“Ookaay…my one-month anniversary of what?”

Alex rolled her eyes to express the classic I-can’t-believe-you’re-asking-that.

“I can answer that in two words,” Blake announced as he entered the room, clearly taking in more of his surroundings than he let anyone know.

“Grilled cheese.” He paused as if he expected her to understand his answer.

When she didn’t react, he said, “I see I’m going to have to use more than two words,” he said, shaking his head. He sighed. “It’s been exactly one month since you and Professor Cooper made passionate love for the first time.”

“Blake!” JJ and Alex said.

“Well, it is.” He shrugged his backpack over his right shoulder.

“And even you remembered this anniversary when I didn’t?”

“No, not until Alex reminded me when we went to bed last night.”

“You two were discussing my love life in bed last night? Is nothing sacred?”

“Sure. Many things are,” Blake said. “But apparently not your love life.”

She placed the lid on her to-go cup. “And what do you suggest I do with this information? Run and tell Kenn about it?”

“Well…” Alex’s voice trailed off.

“No, I will not.”

“Good morning, son.” The familiar voice sang into Kenn’s phone. Kenn was still dealing with the act of waking up. He had programmed his coffee pot to start brewing at six-thirty in the morning. The smell caressed its way to his bedroom. He still struggled, urging his body out of bed to pour a cup.
