“Rain and I are headed for Sturgis for the motorcycle rally,” Garret said.

“Wow. Bike Week in Sturgis, South Dakota. I hear that event is amazing,” Blake said. Alex wondered what it would be like to get on a motorcycle with the love of her life and just take off to, well, anyplace. The wind in their hair. The breeze slapping their cheeks. The bugs splattering their faces. She’d have to think about that road trip more.

“We’re not going to South Dakota. We’re a group of professional businessmen—CEOs, CFOs, bank presidents, upper-level management. We can’t take the time off from work to ride all the way out to South Dakota.” He paused and took a sip of his drink.

“Heck, at our ages, I don’t think we’d even survive the trip all the way there.”

“But you said you were going to Sturgis.” Alex’s curiosity piqued.

“Sturgis, Indiana,” Rain said. “It’s a lot closer and they do a great job of holding a mini-rally for bikers. It’s really lots of fun—without that excruciatingly long trip for those of us east of the Mississippi.”

“5B.”

“That’s our food. I’ll be right back.” Garrett headed toward the counter.

“You two make such a cute couple,” Alex told Rain, as she cupped her hands around her drink.

Rain placed her hand on Alex’s forearm. “No, we’re not a couple in that sense.” She released her hand and angled her body so it was more favorable to a one-on-one conversation.

“I’m traveling with Garrett and the group as part of a sociology study I’m conducting. I’ve been fascinated by this group for the longest time. I finally received a chance to study them. I’m documenting this event for my research for my doctoral dissertation.”

“Something like Jane Goodall and the chimpanzees,” Blake said.

Alex kicked his legs. “Blake.”

“Ouch.” He reached down and rubbed his leg.

“That’s okay,” Rain said, her eyes dancing as she looked at Alex, who was re-evaluating her initial reaction to her based on her clothing.

“You’d be amazed how often I’m compared to her.”

“Darn, I’m not original.”

Garrett returned with their food. He gave Rain her Chernobyl Chicken Meltdown.

“Despite the name, it sounded good,” she said, as if she felt she had to explain her choice.

Garrett placed his Schrodinger’s Steak on the table in front of him and eyed it.

“I’ve seen steak served in all types of ways, but I’ve never seen one served under a box, like this. Are they trying to hide something?”

“The box represents the thought experiment of Erwin Schrodinger,” Blake explained, “created to illustrate the paradox of quantum superposition.”

“What?” Garrett evidently did not see the connection. Blake continued his explanation.

“How did you order your steak?” Blake placed the palm of his hand on the box.

“Medium well.”

“In the thought experiment, Schrodinger also envisioned a radioactive substance in the box with a cat.”

“Wait, are you telling me this steak is radioactive.” Garrett’s eyes grew wide.

Alex couldn’t help but giggle and felt compelled to allay the man’s fears. “No, not at all.”

Blake continued. “According to quantum physics, the unseen cat could be alive or dead, depending on the consciousness of the observer.”

Garret now just looked puzzled. “Okay. But how does that relate to my steak?”
