He watched in wonder as Rain wound up her right arm and drove it into JJ’s eye. “Ouch,” he winced into the microphone. The crowd groaned, as well.

He recovered quickly and resumed his duties. “The Heartbreak Kid just smashed her fist right into Micro Munchkin’s eye.”

He paused a moment, as he reveled in the full effect of the impromptu women’s wrestling match. “That’s gotta hurt, folks. You don’t take a beating like that and walk away from it.”

The punch knocked JJ flat on her butt. As she tried to pull herself up, Rain took hold of her arm and dragged her behind the bar. Blake had a clear view of what was happening even if the crowd didn’t. He felt his duty to report it.

“The Heartbreak Kid is pouring coffee grounds on Micro Munchkin’s head. Now, that’s grounds for retaliation,” he quipped, quite pleased with his humor.

He watched as a photographer forThe Daily Digitran up and snapped a photo.

“Ah, immortalized forever.”

Chapter 52

JJ and Rain stood and glared at each other after the arresting officer pushed them into the same cell at the Bell Wyck Police Department.

“This is all your fault, you little slut,” JJ said. She scanned the small setting. To call it sparse, she thought, was an understatement. A set of bunk beds sat in one corner with lumpy mattresses. In another corner were the sink and a toilet.

“That’s right,” said the man in the cell next to them, who hung on to the bars as he watched them.

She looked over and gave him what she hoped was a dirty look. It did nothing to deter him.

“My fault? Hardly. I wasn’t doing anything but kissing my boyfriend.”

“That’s what she was doing,” the onlooker said. She now knew, by the way he slurred his words, the man was in there for drunkenness.

“But he’s my boyfriend now. I don’t even know where you came from.”

“Yeah, where did you come from, come to think of it?” the drunk asked, eyes squinted and head tilted.

“Shut up!” Rain and JJ said simultaneously and flashed him angry looks. Their spontaneous answer prompted them both to laugh. Rain turned and sat on the bed.

“I sure hope we don’t have to spend the night here. This mattress is paper thin.”

JJ sat next to her. “How in the world did we even end up here?”

“You guys got arrested. Hell, I’m drunk and I even know that.”

“Shut up!”

“He’s right, you know,” JJ said. “We got arrested.” She paused. “Over a damned man.” JJ kicked a leg.

“It’s all my fault.” Rain rose and faced JJ. “I’m sorry to get you into this mess.” She tilted her head and smiled. “I bet if I took the time to get to know you, I’d really like you.”

“No, it’s my fault,” JJ said. “I pushed you first. And I did bite you. You’ll probably need a tetanus shot.”

Rain laughed. “I’ll be sure to get one. But you’re going to have one nasty black and blue mark on that eye.” She paused. “You had every right to shove and bite me. You see, I really was trying to come on to Kenn. I knew the bike group I was riding with was stopping in Bell Wyck. I had every intention of winning him back.”

She knew she should be furious at hearing this, but something in Rain’s eyes calmed her. Or maybe she was just tired of fighting.

“But for the first time, I couldn’t persuade him. Before, I could always convince him that we were made for each other.” She paused. “And it never mattered if he already had a girlfriend. I’m not proud of that. But there’s something special about that man.”

“Yes,” JJ said, nodding slowly as she thought about him. “There is something special about him.”

Rain smiled. “I didn’t know you were even in the picture. He really didn’t want anything to do with me. Honest.” She crossed her heart.

JJ thought about the scene in his office. She now realized his squirming was an effort to put distance between them. “Did you see the horrified look on his face when he saw me?”
