“I’m not using your bathroom.” I’m fully prepared to give him a detailed explanation as to why, when the bathroom door opens again.

And Jaxon walks out.

My mouth falls open, and I let out a disbelieving huff. “You have got to be kidding me.” My heart is pounding.

I can count on one finger the number of things two people do together in a bathroom behind locked doors.

“Makenna…”

Nothing he can say right now will erase the humiliation I feel. I came here to set things right with him. I actually felt bad for the guy. Like I was leading him on, playing him. When the whole time it was apparently the other way around. God, I’m an idiot.

My eyes bounce around the hallway looking for hidden cameras from a reality prank show, but nothing changes. Jaxon is still standing in the doorway, white as a sheet, and Cal is still a six-foot-three brick wall keeping me from punching Jaxon in the throat. David Spade isn’t popping out from behind the door. This is real. This just happened.

“Unless you’re illiterate, which I’m pretty sure you aren’t, there could only be one reason you just walked out of the ladies’ restroom.” I point toward the dining room. “With her.”

“Makenna, listen—”

I throw a hand up to stop him. “It doesn’t matter, Jaxon. This whole thing was a mistake. All of it. The funny thing is, I actually came here to let you go.” On that final note, I have nothing left to say, so I turn and head straight for the door.

It won’t open. No matter how many times I turn the lock or how hard I push on the glass. It won’t open. Who the hell locked the door?

I need to get out of here. The walls are creeping in on me, and I’m starting to feel claustrophobic. To make matters worse, the flavor of the week is now staring at me.

Why can’t I just open the damn door?

“You’re upset. You shouldn’t be driving,” I hear Cal say as he walks up behind me.

My eyes are wild with annoyance, and my heart is pounding loudly in my ears.

Don’t tell me what to do. And if that girl does not stop looking at me…

I point down the hallway. “Did you know what was going on in there? And you let me just stand outside the door like an idiot.” I drop my hand and stare up at him. “Are you really that heartless?”

His blue eyes are doing their best to hypnotize me, but I’m too frustrated for it to work.

I close my eyes for a second to clear my head. Then I take a deep breath and open them again. “You know what? Don’t answer that. Just open the fucking door.” I narrow my eyes. “Please.”

“There’s no magic word, Makenna. You need a key.” His voice never wavers. His eyes never give away a single hint of emotion.

He really is heartless.

“Well…” I hold my hand out, palm up. “…then give me the key.”

“Makenna, this isn’t Cal’s fault,” Jaxon interrupts.

Even though he’s right, his statement still irritates me. Jaxon is the one I’m angry with, so why am I spitting venom at Cal?

“You…” I say, moving my attention from Cal to Jax.

“It’s not like that—” he starts, and I roll my eyes at his lame attempt to justify what just happened.

“Reid would’ve had the balls to talk to me first at least,” I mumble, more to myself than to either one of the men standing in front of me.

“Well, I’m not Reid. And we can’t seem to get past that, can we?” Jaxon’s voice is louder than I’ve ever heard, and there’s a pain in his eyes I hadn’t seen before. “Oh yeah, you play the part great, going through all the motions, saying all the right things. But the truth is, you don’t want to move on. He’s gone, Makenna. And no matter how busy you keep yourself, pretending to live your life, he’s not coming back. Until you accept that, nothing you do, no one you meet, will ever make you happy.”

He’s yelling by now, months of frustration dripping off his every word. When he finishes speaking, the restaurant is so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The servers have stopped cleaning their sections. The hostess stopped rolling silverware into linen napkins. Everyone is focused on us.

I’m looking directly at Jaxon, but it’s not him I see. It’s darkness. And it’s swiftly closing in on me, around me. I concentrate on keeping my breath steady. Then it eclipses me.
