“You’re more than welcome,” he replies calmly, smoothly. Then his gaze drops to my plate. “Please, finish eating. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

I’m having a hard time concentrating on anything but my overwhelming urge to touch him. “I’m not really hungry. It was your dad’s idea.”

He stands and takes my plate, and a spark of amusement flashes in his eyes. “Well, that explains the phone call. At least let me box it for you.”

Jaxon is watching us with a great deal of interest as Callisto brings my plate to the kitchen.

“Don’t even think about it.” I hold a finger up when I witness him about to say something.

He holds his hands up proclaiming his innocence then chuckles to himself as he continues stacking glasses.

Callisto returns with a carryout bag a few moments later.

“What phone call?” I ask, curious about what he found so amusing.

He narrows his eyes.

“You said, ‘That explains the phone call.’ What phone call?”

“There’s a park a couple of miles from here where I run. Usually just at night, but... anyway. My father called and said I needed to get here as soon as possible.” Callisto places the bag on the bar in front of me. “Naturally, my first thought was that something had happened.” His voice trails off.

My heart breaks for him as I remember Carlos’s stroke just a few short months ago. “Oh no.” I squeeze my eyes shut. “I didn’t tell him to call…” I open them again and meet his stare.

He smiles, and my heart skips a beat. “I didn’t think you had.” He laughs and shakes his head. “I also didn’t think my father liked to play Cupid.”

I stare a minute too long at his flawless grin. “I should go.”

“I’ll walk you out.”

The palm of his hand finds the dip in my back, just above my butt. His fingertips apply just the right amount of pressure to send a chill up my spine. I’d give anything to feel those fingertips on my skin again, to feel his lips on mine again. I want to tell him that. I want to ask him if he feels the same way. Would he still have come here if he’d known it was for me?

A black BMW pulls into the parking lot, shutting down my hormones, and igniting a fire in my memory. Callisto is saying something, but all I hear is static. My eyes focus on the driver, and my mouth goes dry. If panic were a drug, it would be coursing through my veins right now, paralyzing me, rendering me helpless.

Callisto moves his hand from my back to my shoulder, forcing me to face him.

I pull my eyes away from the BMW to look at him.

He’s watching me the way you would watch a tightrope walker or stunt driver, waiting for an impending disaster. “Are you okay?” he asks.

“Yeah. I’m fine.” I’m not fine. That’s Jeeves. It has to be. “Really.”

Brush it off, Makenna. Stop acting like a mental patient.

He raises one eyebrow and waits a minute longer before opening my car door.

I want to tell him about my graduation. I want to make sure he knows about the party. But my words are frozen in my throat.

He steps back, allowing me to climb in the driver’s seat. “I’ll see you later, Makenna,” he says with a smile.

“Yeah. I’ll see you later.” Then I watch with dread in my rearview mirror as he walks over to the man in the BMW and gives him the same warm smile.
