“I’m treating a patient with an inoperable brain tumor embedded in his brainstem.”

“Okay? And what does that have to do with us?” Stefan asked.

“The patient is our Uncle Ian.”

“We don’t have an Uncle Ian.” Sam’s brows furrowed.

“Yeah, we do, and I met him through your mother.” I looked at Simon to assess his reaction. “He’s Liam and Henry’s brother.”

“Yeah, right.” He laughed. “What is this?”

“I wish I were kidding, but I’m not. Your mother brought him to me a couple of days ago and wants me to remove the inoperable tumor.”

“Hold on a second. I don’t care about the tumor. Who is this guy?” Shaun asked. “Because I can tell you our fathers had no other brother. I did a full investigation into Henry and this family.”

All of his brothers turned and looked at him.

“What? You know I did.” Shaun sighed.

“Well, cousin. I’m here to tell you that your investigation didn’t go back far enough because our uncle is lying in a bed at Cedars with Barb sitting by his side, holding his hand.”

“Simon’s going to explode. Look at him,” Nathan leaned over and whispered in my ear.

“So, you’re saying my mother knew about this guy all along?” Simon calmly asked. “And kept it from us?”

“I don’t know all the details yet. I spoke with Ian today, and he told me that our fathers had reasons for excluding him from the family.”

“This is unbelievable,” Sam spoke as he shook his head.

“Just another fucking lie in this family.” Simon slammed back his beer.

“There’s more,” I said.

“Now what?” Stefan asked.

“Grayson and Gabriel Kind are Ian’s sons, making them our cousins.”

“Wow. Okay.” Simon stood up from his chair and threw his beer bottle down.

“Sit down, Simon!” Barb shouted as she walked toward us.

“You!” He pointed at her and paused.

“Me what? Sit down and shut your mouth.”

Simon stood there and stared at her with a scowl across his face.

“I said sit down, son.” She pointed to his chair. “For as long as I’m alive, I’m your mother, and you will do what I say.” Her stern voice could be heard across the beach.

“Mom, what the hell is going on?” Sam asked.

“Aunt Barb, what are you doing here?” I asked.

“I never should have put you in this position of telling my sons about your uncle. Listen up, boys. You will keep your mouths shut until I am finished talking. Your fathers kept your uncle out of your lives because he was in a bad way when we were younger.”

“How?” Stefan asked.

“He was a drug addict and fell in with the wrong crowd. One night, there was a fire at your grandparents’ house. Your father and mother were back in New York on break from college.” She pointed at the four of us. “Henry and I were out with them, and your grandparents were home asleep. They barely made it out before the house burnt to the ground. Your grandfather believed in his heart that Ian was the one who had done it because he wanted revenge after your grandfather sold his shares of the company and told Ian that he would never get a dime from him again.
